Santa Rosa High School teacher’s post-election poem went viral
Press Democrat ^ | 26 Dec 2016 | Chris Smith

Snip In his 14 years at the school, Lyon has performed no reading remotely like the one that resonated throughout the historic campus two days after the presidential election in November. He said the response of many Latino students to the election of Donald Trump compelled him to write and broadcast the piece.

The day after the election, “it felt like a funeral,” he said. “People were wearing black and crying. It felt like death.”

Lyon had students coming up and asking, “Are they going to deport me now?” He felt the fear was pervasive. About half the student body is Latino, and many students who are citizens have parents or other family members who risk deportation. Non-Latino students feared for their friends.

“It’s hard to find a kid who doesn’t feel threatened,” Lyon said.

He found that he had to declare something to all of the students worried the president-elect’s vision for America does not include them.

“I felt like silence was unacceptable,” the teacher said.

He sat and found that the words to “We Love You No Matter What,” pretty much streamed out of him.

A student used a cellphone to video him as he spent four emphatic and impassioned minutes delivering his poem over the school’s public address system. He began, “You guys that don’t like my poems, please respect this one.”

Then he launched into the piece that cemented his place as the Panthers’ poet laureate. An excerpt:

Dear undocumented students,

In this school

There are no walls

To keep you out

Dear black students,

Your lives matter

To us

Dear Muslim students, You are not terrorists

2005 students in the school.

36% Hispanic.

8% (160 students) English as a second language.

A decade or two ago, it was estimated 1 in 8 or 1 in 10 people in the US was illegal. It’s likely Santa Rosa has more than the average.

In this school There are no walls

Really? No walls? So anybody can go to that school? Someone who lives in another district, for instance? Someone who's 30 years old? Someone who's a child molester? If walls are so bad, then tear down whatever locks or gates exist in that school, and let in anybody and everybody.

Dear black students, Your lives matter

I must have missed the Trump speech where he said their lives DIDN'T matter.

Dear Muslim students, You are not terrorists

Must have missed the speech where he said all Muslims are terrorists, too.

The word “secede” rather implies that they take their land with them. Otherwise, they would just be “leaving.”

” (And tell me again why it is we won’t let these people secede and form a country more to their liking?)”

because Americans came in from far away lands and died for those lands? They are ours and to give them up to some illegal alien ahole sounds French to me, mon ami.

Mind boggling that Freepers want to surrender hard fought lands to invaders. It’s like those same Freepers keep saying to me to get out of Hollywood when this is my job. No one faggot liberal kicks me out..

You do not hope they deport them, or I should say, you do not wish ill upon them. If they are here illegally, yes, they should go or be deported. Still, this is an upsetting thing. To be pulled from the school, home, and country they have known to something that is foreign. I understand this, unfortunately, they don’t. If they did, they would do what they could to get themselves right with the law. Instead, they eschew the rule of law. That is why they dislike Trump. They THINK he will act outside the law. I do not believe he will. I know Clinton would have acted outside the law, and these people in the article would have been fine with that. They fail to realize that a limited government is one that is beneficial to all. They kept silent when the power of the presidency grew and grew. They invite government into every aspect of their lives. Now they are scared of government’s far reaching arm. Instead of learning from it and working for a restoration of the constitution and the separation of powers, something they should be learning in school instead of the nonsense in this article, there would be no worry about who was in office.

Some of this goes beyond politics. Trust me. Some of these people are simply jealous of CA and it's always been this way. While pulling icicles off their noses in February, we're pulling oranges off the trees and putting ice in our Margaritas. And CA has a huge military presence, not to mention massive strategic harbors, endless expanses of deserts/ocean for training. While some of these people are digging out their driveways, their neighbors who drove to CA in their RVs are sitting in lounge chairs sipping tropical drinks watching a parade of roses or sitting at the beach in January. So there ya have it.

To hell with Alcatraz, to hell with pacific islands, to hell with Death Valley.
They get nothing but a one way ride in a C-130 to the half way point between Hawaii and Midway Island
Hand them a life raft and kick them out at 10,000 feet, parachutes are optional.

I agree - let’s laugh at them, and also destroy them politically.

“My Latino students were laughing and teasing each other. “Oooo, you’re gonna have to go live in Mexico!” “I am not, YOU are! Shut up!””
Obviously not traumatized like the media tries to make out. Thanks.
