Britain's Prince Charles warned against intolerance towards refugees fleeing religious persecution on Thursday, saying the rising tide of populism was reminiscent of the "dark days" of the 1930s.
"The suffering doesn't end when they arrive seeking refuge in a foreign land," the heir to the throne told BBC radio.
"We are now seeing the rise of many populist groups across the world that are increasingly aggressive towards those who adhere to a minority faith."
The 68-year-old, in his third broadcast for the "Thought for the Day" section of popular news programme Today, added: "All of this has deeply disturbing echoes of the dark days of the 1930s."
Charles said his comments applied not just to Christians fleeing parts of the Middle East but also to other persecuted faiths in the world including Yazidis, Jews, Ahmadi Muslims and Baha'i people.
Referring to the "monstrous extremism" seen in World War II, the Prince of Wales said the fact that "nearly 70 years later we should still be seeing such evil persecution is to me beyond all belief".
"We owe it to those who suffered and died so horribly not to repeat the horrors of the past," he said.
In the run-up to Christmas he pointed to the idea that Jesus' family had sought refuge from persecution, and said the Prophet Mohammed had also "migrated" from Mecca to Medina in search of religious freedom.
Prince Charles, who will become the supreme governor of the Church of England when he succeeds his mother Queen Elizabeth II, often speaks out about the plight of Christian minorities in the Middle East.
But he has long said he wants to be seen as a "Defender of Faiths" rather than the monarch's official title of "Defender of the Faith", to reflect Britain's multicultural society.

Until he showed this round of very poor judgment, I was positive on Harry’s likeability as well.
Harry won’t get it and he knows it which may account for his abandoning principles to be a good example for the British public.
Unless William and Charles pass away suddenly and shockingly, Harry is a sideshow.
Considering what is now known the question is if Neville Chamberlain was influenced by the Royal Family.

You write as though “sowing wild oats” is healthy and natural, rather than a mortal sin that corrupts a man, confirming him in cowardice, selfishness, violence, and cruelty.
I write as though it’s not an unusual thing for a healthy young male to do.
Even existing in a human body is inherently sinful for all but Jesus Christ and has been since the fall, everything that flows from there is sinful without Salvation through Jesus Christ by the grace of God.
The Queen seems to be intent on outliving this idiot to keep him from the throne.

I’m looking into it and I don’t think the Queen herself can block Charles from the succession, but Parliament could, and has done that for other heirs in the past.
Charlie’s Dad, Price Philip is from the House of Battenburg. His entire line on his Mother’s side was German. When he was set up to marry his cousin, the Future Queen Elizabeth II, Philip was sold as being Greek. Philip’s Father was a Prince in both Denmark and Greece. So besides all of the inter-marrying, there is a lot of German Blood in Prince Charlie...
If I recall, their jounrney at the time of The Christ's birth, was because of a law enacted by an occupying force.
People from a foreign land, brought their ideals, way of life and power, to force their will upon the people in their own land.
Strange, I don’t recall Jewish refugees from the 30’s setting off bombs in their asylum countries.
And became even more radicalized as a guest in someone else's free community because he didn't like their freedom. Sounds just like what's happening today. Berlin being the latest example.
