Believe it or not, the government wanted the death penalty, but with the representation of his lawyer Plato Cacheris, Hanssen negotiated a plea bargain that enabled him to escape the death penalty in exchange for cooperating with authorities.
Sounds like Hanssen may regret his plea bargain now.

Why go to the expense?? A clear plastic bag with a hose connection is a LOT cheaper, and far simpler to do (probably off the shelf). Nitrogen will work, is readily available, and safer.

Except that “life without parole” almost always is really “until some liberal judge lets you out”.
Lots of inmates are content in prison, and even commit crimes in order to be put back in.
How come we never hear of a botched doctor-assisted suicide?

Great idea! I wonder if it’s ever been considered.
I prefer the Chinese (?) method of execution: A bullet to the back of the head & a bill for the bullet sent to the family of the perp.
All this execution drama is just bad theater.
