Reagan was great, but it's now Trump's turn
Fox News Opinion ^ | December 9, 2016 | Steve Moore

Has Ronald Reagan passed the Republican Party baton to Donald Trump?

I suggested as much a few days ago, critics objected that I was blaspheming the Gipper. They said his ideas of limited government, individual freedom, lower taxes and peace through strength will live on forever.

Amen to that. Yes, Reagan's ideals should always be the guiding light of the GOP. Radio talk show host Mark Levin, reminded his listeners that Reagan won two landslide elections, while Trump so far has won one narrow victory. Levin says that Reagan was a real conservative, and Trump isn’t, "Shame on you, Stephen Moore," he lectured.

But the critics are entirely missing my point. ‎Trump won with states like Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, which the GOP has rarely, if ever, carried since 1984. He put together a working-class coalition that included many longtime and union Democrats in a way that few Republicans — even George W. Bush in his two victories — were able to do. He appealed to these voters with a somewhat different set of policy promises than Reagan did.

It is true that many of the voters who crossed over to the GOP were the old Reagan Democrats. But I met many union workers who told me they voted for Trump and who never before voted Republican....

Based on my observations so far, Donald Trump is on pace to blow Ronald Reagan out of the water. I was a young man serving in the Marine Corps during Reagan’s first term so I remember that era very well. Reagan was a refreshing change from Carter and he made the decade of the 1980s one of the best times to be an American. But I think Trump is about to take things to a level we have never seen before. His work ethic, his drive and his utter fearlessness to bust up the status quo and try new things has potential to change our nation permanently.

For the better, I presume.

Reagan didn’t do anything to secure the border. I guess that makes him a ‘real conservative’ according to Levin

Actually, he did, but it didn't work out well.

He instituted a program paying $500 for each illegal fingered for deportation. Unfortunately, that was enough to have buddies turn them in for the money only to have them come back again. You need to secure the border AND deportation, in that order. Otherwise you are bailing a leaky boat.

Levin’s bias and hypocrisy have been laid naked. The other night after Trump’s tweet about Boeing and Air Force One, Levin was furious about Trump, “going after,” a great American company like Boeing.
During tbe summer of 2015, when some conservatives in Congress were making overtures to try and shut down the Export Import bank, I specifically remember Levin remarking how Boeing was one of the bank’s biggest beneficiaries, how this was an example of crony capitalism, why does Boeing get taxpayer subsidies, etc.
Levin is borderline unstable and as unhinged as Beck.

Comparisons with Reagan are way too prenmature.

RR was a conservative. Trump is not.
RR was the best inspirational speaker ever. Trump...not so much.

Is it good that Trump was elected? Yes. The country needs an outsider at this moment. I voted for him, and I think the first blush is positive.

But he needs eight more years before these comparisons can even start to be made.

Drivel! trumps carrier deal of 16 million will buy robots, automation upgrade. He has a trillion dollar stimulus lined up and ivankas is already claiming for the children with taxpayer dollars. So of the 1000 jobs, how many do we get? Jobs created or saved.. dt so far, is making Obama moves. I won’t sit by and give an R a free pass. If he picks gun grabber joe Manchin for anything, I am through with the NRA. Dt actions scream liberal and he is backing down from his make believe campaign rhetoric.

His style is rambling and disjointed.

His message is good. His style not so much.

Reagan could turn a phrase. They are both actors—one playing a role and the other a reality TV actor.

And it was hard for him to be for a wall at the same time he was telling Gorbachev to tear down his.

One wall to keep prisoners in(Gorbachev), another to keep criminals out (Reagan).

No, not that hard. In fact not hard at all.

I agree that Levin has become hard to listen to. He has become stuck in this constitutional amendment fantasy world of his.

Yes, and both using their own individual communication gifts and styles, won the Presidency. Viva la difference!
