Police chief: 3 young children, ages 5 through 9, killed in Four Hills shooting (ABQ NM)

Three children, ages 5, 6 and 9, were killed in a shooting in the Four Hills neighborhood Monday night and the suspect is dead, according to Albuquerque Police Chief Gorden Eden.

Eden said a man broke into a home on Stagecoach SE and laid in wait for a 36-year-old woman who lives there to arrive home with her three children. When they arrived, he gunned them down.

The three children died, and the woman was rushed to the hospital where she was in critical condition Tuesday morning.

The suspect, a 45-year-old man, was also rushed to the hospital with a gunshot wound, and he died there.

Spokeswoman Celina Espinoza said no identities are being released now. “Investigators are still conducting interviews, and very close loved ones do not yet know the full circumstances surrounding this case,” she said. “We would like to be able to ensure they are told responsibly and with care.”

From new information, it doesn't sound like a divorce but a man she was dating subsequent to the divorce:

It appears she had a short relationship with the man and broke it off when she found out who he really was. He then took "revenge." Pure evil ...

The wounded mother was shot trying to protect one of the children but managed to crawl to a neighbors house for help. The shooter was 45 years old and had a criminal record, though not recent. Due to her critical condition, they have not been able to interview her yet.
