Farmers: New proposed law in Town of Sweden (NY) could cripple our businesses

Local farmers say a new proposed law in the Town of Sweden could cripple their businesses and potentially their livelihood.

Best known for their U-Pick Pumpkin Patch and October events, McCracken Farms draws in people from all over the state every year. Now, the farm's owner, Paul McCracken tells us it might be more difficult to bring in all those visitors.

"We've been doing this for over 30 years and now all of a sudden, here's a whole slew of zoning permits and special-use permits," says McCracken. "The list goes on and on, it's unnecessary."

The newly required permits come from the Special Events Law proposed by the Town of Sweden. The law says any "temporary gathering, demonstration, performance, exhibition, amusement or activity" that would bring in a certain number of cars and people would now require a permit.

Hope, change, and.......’Progress’.

Come on buddy, your state is running low on tax revenue, and running low on people to tax. They have to get it from somewhere. Either band over, or move out.

NY state, the very same state that worked extremely hard to drive farmers out of business while simultaneously running a radio advertisement that claimed, “New York is proud of its dairy farmers!”

I can’t stand the concept of local permits, our city requires a permit to have a simple garage sale....hell, I’ve built buildings here without getting a building permit!!! and will continue to do so.

If an event generates an inordinate amount of traffic in a normally quiet location it is reasonable that the municipality be notified, and a permit does just that. How much police overtime will be required in the interest of public safety, and should some fee not be charged to offset the cost? Some consideration is reasonable, but many municipalities overdo it.

Reminds me of when my father wanted to add a garage to our house in a tiny community in upstate NY.

The village's zoning czar didn't even have an office: we met him in his house.

Out came a binder with about 1000 pages of regulations.

After thumbing through some regulations and seeing references to palm trees and some other info, I was able to discern that our distinguished village aldermen had simply adopted all the regulations of some Southern California regulatory hell-hole.

These pumpkin farmers and wineries should have stopped the city from moving the city limits out so far into the country. These extra fees were inevitable after that.

Another article on the topic. Sounds like some of these operations are on a few acres
which are located within the jurisdiction of a town.

Apparently NYS isn’t losing taxpayers, jobs, and House seats fast enough for the ruling class.

Permits: when government steals your rights and rents some of them back to you, or not.
