Mitt Romney is at the top of the president-elect's list, sources familiar with Trump's thinking told the show.

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani is fading as a candidate, they added.

Jon Huntsman, a former Republican governor of Utah and U.S. ambassador to China, is reportedly not a serious contender to lead the State Department, while retired Gen. David Petraeus is also no longer a serious candidate.

Trump will meet Tuesday with ExxonMobil CEO Rex W. Tillerson and is "intrigued" with Tillerson's "vast knowledge of the world," according to "Morning Joe."

Trump campaign manager Kellyanne Conway said Sunday that Trump had "broadened the search" for the nation's top diplomat.

Trump has met with multiple candidates for the post throughout the transition.

The president-elect has faced backlash over his consideration of Romney for secretary of State.

Conway and former Speaker Newt Gingrich have both been critical of Romney, who spoke out strongly against Trump during his presidential campaign.

Doesn’t bother me that Rudy doesnt get SOS.

DOES bother me that Trump is gonna #### him with no position.

Just like he did Christie.

But Rudy deserves better.

Mitt Romney is a terrible choice in multiple ways. He would not be loyal to President Trump. He does not have a good feel for the best interests of the United States. And he has too delicate an ego to work with capable people. I don’t agree with his political views, and I do not trust him as a person. Anyone but Mitt.

I am really wondering what Trump’s hesitancy with John Bolton really is.... he seems like a great fit for the job.

I WANT BOLTON! Not perfect but he is humble man and would carry out Trump's directives. Romney already screwed the pooch with his derogatory statements about Trump and his EGO would prevent him from following Trump's lead.

Bolton has a wealth of political and military experience who is gritty yet personable and humorous but most importantly A REALIST. A perfect blend for SOS under Trump.

Trump needs to realize that he would be hiring Megan Kelly’s alter ego. That Shedog of Fox News worked for him

“Romney at the top of the list”

uh, yeah. right. i somehow doubt that if Romney was such a shoo-in the search for SoS would be so “wide open”. Assuming the “wide-open” part is true, i kinda doubt President Trump is super enamored with Romney.

As far as I can tell, Bolton is acceptable. It may be a chemistry thing, but bad chemistry is better than bad personnel. Bolton is not the only acceptable choice, but at least he is acceptable - unlike Mitt.
