The Su-33 aircraft skidded off the runway while landing on the Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier in the Mediterranean, Russian news agencies reported on Monday citing a statement from the Russian defence ministry.

The pilot ejected from the plane and is safe, the defence ministry was quoted as saying.

A statement from the ministry, said: "While landing after completing a combat task in the Syrian sky, a Su-33 fighter jet skidded off the dock because the cable of the stopping device broke. "The pilot ejected and was immediately brought aboard the Admiral Kuznetsov heavy aircraft carrier by rescuers. "His life is not in danger. "The ship-based aviation continues its flights in accordance with its tasks."

The first one was due to "engine shutdown". Both engines quit in flight. There was some discussion that it might have been fuel starvation due to a fouled deck but nothing definitive as to cause. That one was aircraft systems related.

This latest occurrence was due to an arrester cable parting. That is obviously ship related althought there is a report that the pilot was not "prepared" to deal with such an occurrence. IMO that is different that a bolter and one highly publicized occurrence shown on the History channel showed the cable failing and the F-18 was lost there too.

Frankly, you hear about similar occurrences off San Diego during carrier qualifications. Carrier operations is a risky business.

Well, with Putin keen to scare the hell out of all of the world and to rebuild his empire, I don’t mind if his forces have a bad day.

Attrition by any means is a gain for the our side. I agree it’s good when the “Empire Strikes Out”.

not if it's the last one... that's why they goto full power after hitting the deck cause stuff happens, break a cable, miss the 4 wire, ya better be at full power

Seems complicated. What was wrong with the old system os a couple of sandbags tied to a bit of rope?
