At least nine people died in a massive fire that destroyed a northern California warehouse that was an artist collective during an electronic music party early Saturday morning and officials said the building had no sprinkler system or working smoke detectors.
Fire Chief Teresa Deloche-Reed said that at least another 25 people are still unaccounted for after the deadly blaze started around 11:30pm in the 1300 block of 31st Avenue during an event advertised as 'Rave Cave' featuring musician Golden Donna's 100% Silk West Coast tour.
'We still have to do a more thorough search of the building and we don't know the potential number of other victims,' Deloche-Reed said.
'In my career of 30 years, I haven't experienced something of this magnitude.'

Did they have a safe space to access?????? \sarcasm
“...the two-story building that is known as an artists enclave called The Oakland Ghost Ship.”
Please, remind me never to go to a party on a Ghost Ship.
May these poor people rest in peace and may their families be comforted. Very dreadful.

Intrusive, expensive government regulations have no place in a free nation.
<<
The issue is NOT regulation, but who regulates? When government regulates, there is no choice, and no alternative. There is only compliance. There is only compulsion. When a person politely declines to comply because the regulation is unreasonable, there is only deadly force.
In other circumstances, insurance companies regulate with a far greater level of compliance than any government agency can attain. Aviation is a great example, where a pilot may legally fly many airplanes without any extra training but where the insurance company will impose a requirement for comprehensive training and signoff.
Lastly, such a question ignores the basic human responsibility to no put yourself at unnecessary risk. There have been other fires at nightclubs where a lot of people died. But do we ever warn people to be aware of the hazards of a public venue? No we don’t. We say, well we have government regulation and so I don’t have to ever worry. And we assume that government never fails to do its job thoroughly and without bias or corruption.
Raves = loss-leader events for drug cartel young customers.
At first glance they thought it was a perfect place to have a party.

“Reminds one of that Rhode Island nightclub fire in 2003 - 100 dead.”
Yes, just awful. And the infamous Cocoanut Grove fire in Boston decades ago. Here is the wiki link
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cocoanut_Grove_fire
According to that piece “492 people [were killed] (which was 32 more than the building’s authorized capacity)”
One report said two exits.
Thanks for posting that link. I like how he says this “The staircase to second floor was haphardazous..” he can’t spell, but I like that new word, it probably describes things exactly.
Not for nothing, but he seems like an educated young fellow. Kids will be kids and you don’t have to be a bum to end up at the wrong party. I think most of us know that.
Arson again by youknowwho?
Many of these raves just pop up out of nowhere on short notice maybe a day or two prior to the event because they are against code and drug fueled.
By the time the PD and FD find out about it, it is over and the promoters have left town.
I know! It’s a wonderfully effective word, isn’t it?
Kid had his wits about him, he wrote his account in a reporter-like way. Actually, more the way reporters USED to write.
Chicago Iroquois Theater Fire. Over 600 dead.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iroquois_Theatre_fire
L
Wrong. That’d be the Iroquois Theater Fire in Chicago.
L
602 killed in that.
663, to date 2016 murdered in Chiraqo.
Yep. And we have another month to go.

Worth giving Matrix Reloaded another 30 min or so. The car chase in it is pretty intense.
You’re right though, the movie isn’t a classic.
It wouldnt take much to overwhelm a single staircase.
Especially if the fire started on the first floor. From my observations it appears there were no alternative means of egress. One way in one way out, through the flames potentially.
The building code inspectors and LEOs who knew for "years" ought to be up on criminal charges.
.
Probably someone free-basing started it.
