China lodges diplomatic protest following Trump's phone call with President Tsai Ing-wen of Taiwan

China lodged a diplomatic protest on Saturday after President-elect Donald Trump spoke by phone with President Tsai Ing-wen of Taiwan, but blamed the self-ruled island Beijing claims as its own for the "petty" move.

The 10-minute telephone call with Taiwan's leadership was the first by a U.S. president-elect or president since President Jimmy Carter switched diplomatic recognition from Taiwan to China in 1979, acknowledging Taiwan as part of "one China".

China's Foreign Ministry said it had lodged "stern representations" with what it called the "relevant U.S. side", urging the careful handling of the Taiwan issue to avoid any unnecessary disturbances in ties.

"The one China principle is the political basis of the China-U.S. relationship," it said.

The wording implied the protest had gone to the Trump camp, but the ministry provided no explanation.

Speaking earlier, hours after Friday's telephone call, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi pointedly blamed Taiwan for the exchange, rather than Trump, a billionaire businessman with little foreign policy experience.

"This is just the Taiwan side engaging in a petty action, and cannot change the 'one China' structure already formed by the international community," Wang said at an academic forum in Beijing, China's Foreign Ministry quoted him as saying.

"I believe that it won't change the longstanding 'one China' policy of the United States government."

Disagree, bowing to China for 40 years has been stupid. If China were to liquidate U.S treasuries they’d have no advantage, they’d be as screwed as the rest of the world. They would have no market to sell to. The truth is, there is already a trade war and the U.S is getting destroyed by the likes of China. Buckle up, it’s not going to be business as usual. China and there policy of killing babies in the womb should not be the paramount concern of the United States government and if you are afraid to say something because they hold your debt that shows you how badly the U.S is losing this trade war.

There is likely to be massive U.S. bond selling in the days and weeks ahead. And let’s not forget there are countries aligned with China who hold some of our debt as well.

Interesting times we live!

Interesting how the U.S. sells Taiwan billions of dollars of military equipment but I should not accept a congratulatory call.

Taiwan is today an undeclared nuclear power, just as Israel was an undeclared nuclear power in the nineteen sixties and seventies.

An invasion of Taiwan from mainland China is by default nuclear. How do you come up with an idea that we won’t be drawn in anyway?

Good morning redgolum. I understand your anxiety re: what appears to be a deliberate treading on the toes of Red China, but consider this;
1. Taiwan’s President called Trump to congratulate his victory. As others have already said, should he have refused the call? What wimpy message would he be sending Peking?
2. As John Bolton said this morning, does Red China dictate to us whom we may associate with? If so, then we might as well lower the flag, learn to say “May I?” in Mandarin and become become China’s lapdog.
3. For 20 years we pretended that mainland China didn’t even exist. 1 Republican and 3 Democrats almost literally stuck their fingers in their ears when the subject was broached. It took Nixon in 1972 to establish relations with Peking. Are we now supposed to pretend Taiwan and its 26 million people don’t exist?
4. If Red China has no problem allying itself with North Korea, one of the most repressive governments and world exporter of terrorism, then they have no justification for objecting to our relationship with one of the freer nations in the Far East. Furthermore, Taiwan poses no threat to PRC while Pyongyang starves its people to pay for its bloated military budget and issues almost weekly threats to South Korea and The United States.
5. Finally, as far as them holding so much of our debt (BTW, whose idea was it to borrow money from a potential enemy?), there’s an old saying in finance. When you borrow $1,000, the bank owns you. When you borrow $1,000,000, you own the bank. Just how much have we borrowed from PRC so far?
IMO, this is just the MSM looking for another reason to bitch about the results of the 11/8 vote. If Trump had refused the call, I have no doubt the same members of the media would be complaining about Trumps rudeness in refusing a call from our ally. He’s not going to win either way as far as these guardians of the 4th estate are concerned, so he might as well do the right thing...

So who was the ever so wise US originator of this one China policy?

It was basically big american companies that wanted to manufacture their garbage by chinese slave labor and make a killing that way. The price was to recognize china and throw Taiwan (a democracy and our ally) into the trash.

I would be very surprised if Trump doesn’t adopt an attitude that the US will speak to anyone we want to regardless of what China thinks. Since when does CHINA direct the U.S. foreign relations? Dim wit Carter has been gone from the scene a very longtime and now Carter’s Demwits have been kicked out as well. FREEDOM is returning to America with Trump. It feels good to be an American again!

Not likely. They have great problems of their own and have also divested themselves of their former position.

Baloney. This was a hugely independent move by Trump. The USA is going to be FIRST again around the world. He has been telling the world for months.
China sold off a bunch of their “position” and have enormous financial problems of their own.
China is now seeing the handwriting on the wall that America is going to be building our own factories again and we will once again be able to buy a hammer with Made in America stamped on it along with everything else up to an including phones.
WE ARE THE LARGEST CONSUMER IN THE WORLD. Time for some respect! We can make our own and buy our own and there is NOTHING China can do to stop it.
