China lodges diplomatic protest following Trump's phone call with President Tsai Ing-wen of Taiwan

China lodged a diplomatic protest on Saturday after President-elect Donald Trump spoke by phone with President Tsai Ing-wen of Taiwan, but blamed the self-ruled island Beijing claims as its own for the "petty" move.

The 10-minute telephone call with Taiwan's leadership was the first by a U.S. president-elect or president since President Jimmy Carter switched diplomatic recognition from Taiwan to China in 1979, acknowledging Taiwan as part of "one China".

China's Foreign Ministry said it had lodged "stern representations" with what it called the "relevant U.S. side", urging the careful handling of the Taiwan issue to avoid any unnecessary disturbances in ties.

"The one China principle is the political basis of the China-U.S. relationship," it said.

The wording implied the protest had gone to the Trump camp, but the ministry provided no explanation.

Speaking earlier, hours after Friday's telephone call, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi pointedly blamed Taiwan for the exchange, rather than Trump, a billionaire businessman with little foreign policy experience.

"This is just the Taiwan side engaging in a petty action, and cannot change the 'one China' structure already formed by the international community," Wang said at an academic forum in Beijing, China's Foreign Ministry quoted him as saying.

"I believe that it won't change the longstanding 'one China' policy of the United States government."

Maybe we threaten ban of Chinese imports? Who does it hurt first and most?

I found a search engine and searched for taiwan and china and US and stumbled onto 1.83 billion, weapons sold to Taiwan (IN 2015) by obama admin.

it was just last year that obama admin sold that amount of defense weaponry to Taiwan.. and Chine protested..

quite the lack of memory the media has.. or trump had this happen in the same ‘month’ that china got upset last year..
but last year, obama was causing the chinese to ‘protest’..

China owns most of our debt, and makes most of our stuff. Trump just gave them a major (as in “Start a war” major) insult. The understanding since Nixon is that we will deal with PRC, if they don’t invade Tawain. And that PRC is the only “China”. Reunification has been the understanding since the 1990’s.

Honestly, this was a hugely stupid move by Trump.

I agree that we need to recognize Taiwan, no matter what China says.

However...does it really help to thoroughly piss-off a country that has missiles armed with devices that make cities go ‘boom’...and likely already aimed at us?

I’m all for giving the BAMF (Big American Middle Finger) to our enemies. Let’s just make sure that after we’ve stuck that in their faces, we don’t pull back a bloody stump.

Do you want to have a world war, that gets nuclear, to support Taiwan?

We don’t have the military to do ANYTHING in that region to stop China if they start rolling. We need to build up first and then start playing the cards.

Very much doubt it. You are just looking at the comments the Wong way.

The subject of China needs to be dealt with. Not Taiwan.

The understanding has ALWAYS been that if China invades Taiwan, we will defend Taiwan. Not that anyone expected a Democrat to follow through on that implicit defense agreement, but everyone always expected a Republican would.

Art of the Deal. Trumps establishes the predicate before negotiations with the PRC after talking to the ROC.

China doesn’t own “most” of our debt. They own 7%. Do your homework.

According to Hellary, Trump and Putin are best friends. That leaves China out on it’s own. They might want to think about that before getting their panties in a wad over a phone call. The world is calling Trump, not the other way around. China might want to think that through as well.
