President-elect Donald Trump spoke Friday with Taiwans president, a major departure from decades of U.S. policy in Asia and a breach of diplomatic protocol with ramifications for the incoming presidents relations with China.
Trump spoke by phone with Taiwanese President Tsai Ying-wen, Trump spokeswoman Hope Hicks said. The conversation was first reported by the Financial Times and the Taipei Times.
The call is the first known contact between a U.S. president or president-elect with a Taiwanese leader since the United States broke diplomatic relations with the island in 1979. China considers Taiwan a province, and news of the official outreach by Trump is likely to infuriate the regional military and economic power.
A spokeswoman for the Embassy of Taiwan said she could not immediately confirm that the conversation took place, and said she was seeking guidance from Taiwan.

Why wouldn’t he talk with the Chinese President?
He’ll talk to the ChiComs too.
Good for Trump. Taiwan has the same relationship with the PRC as North and South Korea have with each other and the US talks to both of those governments.
Historic....lol. obama minions are going to lose their minds over this one. China will be upset and all that. Pfft.
Commie China is in big trouble, American Commies soon to be out of power.
a good step, DJT!
Regardless, I think this is great. China has been peeing all over Bammy and his administration. Let them know we can also play that game. Plus, all those foreign policy "experts" that went NeverTrump will have a cow. A twofer.
Trump is still a private citizen. He’s not yet our head of state, but pi$$ing off the Red Chinese is a good idea in my estimation. Trump is getting a head start on putting these Red Turds in their place. Taiwan is a separate country, and it’s long past time when the Mainland understands we regard them as such. I don’t think that right now the Red Chinese have many cards to play what will their economy tanking and the prospect of the US repatriating a lot of our mfg. work.
So 1979 would mean that we haven’t talked to them since President Jimmy Carter. I surprised that Reagan let that policy stand. I suppose that President Reagan considered the USSR to be the focus of policy.
The times, they are a-changin’.
Perhaps Trump will begin to undo the error made by Nixon and perpetuated by every president since.
The interior of their craniums resemble a marble mimicking the atomic logo, ricocheting around inside.
LMAO
These folks hadn’t a single clue.
Now a real man is in there, and it’s too much for them.
You’re exactly right.
What’s China going to do, quit trading with us?
Who has who by the scrotum now?
Wow. Talk about smashing the grass ceiling.
You know it has got to give obama grief....historic, they always say that about anything he does. Now Trump is actually doing it.
BINGO!
Stupidest thing Nixon ever did was stabbing free China in the back in favor of the Commies.
Historic grief...
LOL
LOL! Well done.
