German MP proposes 'free basic income' for parents

It wouldn’t be the first progressive idea to be taken on by conservatives. A group of Bundestag members in the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) have proposed offering parents a basic state income — independent of their own financial situation.

The fixed monthly payment, the exact amount of which was not mentioned, would be tied to child care costs and would be subject to social insurance contributions.

The payment, part of what the CDU calls its “family pact,” would also be paid out from birth until the child starts school, regardless of whether the parents send their children to kindergartens or other daycare centers.

“The family pact is a completely new approach to giving families true freedom to choose,” said CDU MP Sylvia Pantel, who has launched the initiative along with a handful of fellow MPs in her party (which is led by Chancellor Angela Merkel). …

Is there a word for integrity an many western european countries?

I’m not tooting the old horn, but staying on SSDI for good after 6 years would have been a ### of a lot easier than working overnights, most times with splitting headaches that a take 6 advil a shift for.

But 1. It pays a lot more than SSDI, 2. What example would I be setting for the younger folks in the family 3. there’s not enough good TV :) 4. I spend a lot of my time at work on FR anyway :)

10 to 6:30am. Usually gets real busy around 2:30ish :)

In 1969, the Nixon administration proposed the “Family Assistance Plan,” which was, in essence, a guaranteed annual income. But it died, in part, because of opposition from California governor Ronald Reagan.

There’s an even better solution to poverty than a $15 minimum wage (Basic universal income)

Sad how Reagan and Nixon were on good terms in the early 1960s (Reagan confided his feelings on JFK to him in a 1960 letter, saying “Under the tousled boyish haircut is still old Karl Marx”), and then Nixon adopted the politics of the enemy when he himself became President.

Bringing in invaders lowers income so of course they need to do this to compensate with a welfare plan...that also goes to invaders

That’s a great idea.

Problem is, the social market economy (instituted by Konrad Adenauer) is something that Germany really needs to unlearn, never mind all of the EU countries being bound to it by the Treaties of European Union (including the Treaty of Lisbon).

.... Well .... They do know they would be destroying their entire workforce .... right? Naw .... Probably not ..... When production and GDP drops drastically then they will have to bring in more Syrian and other Refugees and imports to cover the productivity shortfall in the country ..... Well until they themselves qualify for the free money ... then the vicious cycle keep repeating .... and so on ... and so on ...

I feel crazy even mentioning what has always seemed to me to be a fine approach to parenting ... if you can’t afford kids, don’t have kids. Guess that whole idea is passe ... So much better these days to build a giant government redistribution apparatus and subject people to paying for other peoples (baby momma’s) kids. What could go wrong?

I’m in favor of abolishing welfare and replacing it with a universal basic income program.

The idea is to create a floor or safety net through which no one can fall - and people can earn and keep any earned income above it.

Welfare discourages work because you lose your benefits when you earn more than a certain amount. Its counter-intuitive, stupid and inhumane.

Dependency should not be the policy goal of a decent society.

Nope, no state income whatsoever.
Consider the consequences to the recipient of welfarism. For one thing, he mortgages himself to the federal government. In return for benefits—which, in the majority of cases, he pays for—he concedes to the government the ultimate in political power—the power to grant or withhold from him the necessities of life as the government sees fit. Even more important, however, is the effect on him—the elimination of any feeling of responsibility for his own welfare and that of his family and neighbors.

A man may not immediately, or ever, comprehend the harm thus done to his character. Indeed, this is one of the great evils of Welfarism—that it transforms the individual from a dignified, industrious, self-reliant spiritual being into a dependent animal creature without his knowing it. There is no avoiding this damage to character under the Welfare State. Welfare programs cannot help but promote the idea that the government owes the benefits it confers on the individual, and that the individual is entitled, by right, to receive them. Such programs are sold to the country precisely on the argument that government has an obligation to care for the needs of its citizens. Is it possible that the message will reach those who vote for the benefits, but not those who receive them? How different it is with private charity, where both the giver and the receiver understand that charity is the product of the humanitarian impulses of the giver, not the due of the receiver. […]

… Let welfare be a private concern. Let it be promoted by individuals and families, by churches, private hospitals, religious service organizations, community charities and other institutions that have been established for this purpose. If the objection is raised that private institutions lack sufficient funds, let us remember that every penny the federal government does not appropriate for welfare is potentially available for private use—and without the overhead charge for processing the money through the federal bureaucracy. Indeed, high taxes, for which government Welfarism is so largely responsible, is the biggest obstacle to fund raising by private charities. …

The Conscience of a Conservative, ch. 8, pp. 73-74
Humanity was able to survive without any kind of basic income that bound one to government. Government needs to get out of the way utterly, and that includes overgrown state governments.

Vicious cycle: big government makes jobs disappear, resulting in people not being afford to have kids, unless they become dependent on big government. Remove big government, and what becomes possible?

That could be the scariest phrase in the German language too, for those who have ears to listen: Ich bin von der Regierung, und ich bin hier um zu helfen.
