Why Trump is courting Romney for the State Department
American Thinker ^ | 11/29/2016 | Thomas Lifson

All the brouhaha over the alleged rifts within the Trump transition over Mitt Romney misses the point. I think it is theatre, a distraction by the same man who was able to direct media attention where he wanted it all throughout the campaign. Donald Trump has a plan that eludes his critics, who can’t help thinking about politics the way it has always been played, and still do not grasp his thinking nor the range of new tools he brings to the presidency. The Department of State is badly broken and desperately needs to be fixed. State requires fundamental restructuring as well

If Romney was purely a technocrat I could buy this argument.

He is not. He is a man with his own political agenda.
One clearly at odds with Trump’s. He cannot be relied upon
to be a team player.

In general ex-CEO’s make crappy team players anyway.
And this one has an axe to grind.

“Aw, Mitt. I know you’re disappointed. But after three and a half interviews, I just didn’t think your pro-Liberal-Establishment credentials were a good fit. I’m sure you’ll do well in some future Administration who wants a Lesser America. I’ll be sure to tell everyone in the public how I feel.”

We want to know what you think.

I am not buying it. Trump is probably following long established precedent. The world thinks that the SoS must be presidential, so Romney is a real choice. Trump is sensitive to us and that is why he is listening to all this. Remember he voted for Romney and said that he thought Romney would be a great president. (ugggghhh... Did I just say that?!)

Trump may want to pacify the Rinos with this, but he ain’t gonna make us mad with it either at the same time.

I am rationalizing it, I know, but the more I think about it...well... I am trusting Trump! If this who he wants, then do it! If he tells us WHY, then I think we’ll get behind it.

I would not be totally opposed to Romney's selection, though he really hurt himself -- and his personal legacy -- with those idiotic moves aimed at derailing Trump's campaign. He may have a political agenda but he's not a political figure at heart. His resume as a business leader is far more impressive than his limited political career (one term as governor of MA and two failed presidential bids).

Putting him in charge of the U.S. State Department will work in two ways: (1) his leadership and organizational skills will be valuable at a time when the department needs a housecleaning from top to bottom; and (2) it will send a strong message around the world that business relationships are more important to the U.S. than the stupid heavy-handed militarism we've seen for the last 25 years.

I see what you are saying but if Mitt Romney had a political agenda and concrete world view wouldn’t we have heard about it in 2008?

Send Romney to France, where he served as a Mormon missionary.

Hard to say what is best from the bleachers but trust Trump to make the right decision.

These are troubled times w our foreign policy. i would imagine the clean up job needed there is substantial.

I doubt Mittens would be setting the actual policies but taking direction from other Trump advisors.

He is a man with his own political agenda.

I think we’ve seen quite enough of Mitt’s duplicity already. As SoS his functions would go well beyond reorganizing the Department. It would provide a platform for him to do a lot of mischief on his own initiative. Why run that risk?

I don't like it one bit, I find Romney really distressing, and sent Trump a note through his website. This was the kind of note that Kellyanne Conway was referring to.

That being said, Lifson is a thoughtful commentator, one who deserves listening to, and he makes some good points in his article..

If Trump decides to hire him as SOS, he has had enough time to think this through, and I will trust his instincts in spite of the fact I don't like Romney.

We'll know soon enough.

Trump encouraged Conway to trash Romney on TV over the weekend.

I saw that earlier. I was surprised - at least a bit. But the MSM must be in shock. They simply cannot figure Trump out.

This is so much fun.

Foggy Bottom is one of the biggest swamps in D.C.. Definitely needs to be drained. I doubt Mitt would. To him, it is a beautiful lake.

I thought at first that Trump might be playing Romney, but then came the dinner planned for tonight.

At the very least, Trump is picking Romney's brain.

I think Lifson makes a good deal of sense when he suggests that the State Department could be marginalized under a Trump administration at least until Romney or someone else can repair and restructure it to bring it in line with Administration thinking.

Romney might be a good candidate for a complete restructuring of State and he might have convinced Trump of that.

As for Kellyanne's rants on Sunday, they might have served several purposes, from testing Romney's mettle to giving vent to internal voices who strongly dislike Rommey.

It might have also been sending a message to Romney that he might have to reach out to those on the transition team who are offended by his selection.

It was always rumored that Trump likes to set up his team in ways that force its members into conflict with the end goal being the production of the widest array of ideas permitting Trump to analyze and ultimately select the best possible outcome or solution.

As much as I dislike Romney, his selection would certainly fit with that strategy.

I agree. I don’t know what’s going on with this, but I think it is about everything EXCEPT naming Minion to SecState. It could be some leverage vs. WI, MI, PA “moderates” to squelch this recount crap.

If you want to finish a man's political career, make him SOS.

Romney won't be able to criticize the Trump administration if he is part of it.

I get no sense from Team Trump, and I mean at the top, that they are seriously thinking about Romney. They could be lying to me, but they haven’t so far.
