First a polar bear petted a dog. Then a polar bear did what polar bears do: Ate a dog.

A video of an enormous polar bear in Canada gingerly patting a chained sled dog hit the Internet last week and quickly went viral. The Huffington Post lauded its “cuteness factor.” The man who shot the video praised the bear for showing “that kind of heart toward another animal.”

But reality soon intervened. Canada’s CBC News reported that officials had removed three polar bears from the same property in Churchill after one killed and ate another dog. The owner of the site, who raises the sled dogs, told the network that the slaughter had occurred on “the only day we didn’t feed the f—— bears, the only night we didn’t put anything out.”

The irony of the two incidents spawned commentary on the perils of the attributing human emotions to animals and imposing a moral code the creatures can’t possibly be expected to live up to. They also renewed anger at the owner of the site, Brian Ladoon, who has long been a target of animal rights activists and conservationists who decry his chaining of dogs and luring of polar bears for tourist photo-ops.

The squirrels in my yard fight over the food I put out for them, and animals eat other animals. No sense in being too sentimental about the animal world.

Like I said in the first thread: He wasn’t petting, he was tenderizing.

You are right, A dog with no fat on it is dry tasting and stringy, the bear was just a smart shopper.

“King of the Hill” had a great episode (I believe related to Y2K) where Dale Gribble is examining dogs at the local shelter; as the staffer starts to see where he is going (commenting on their fat content and such), he shoos them out the door...

Feeding polar bears has consequences.

And we here in the other 56 states sit around and argue about which handgun to carry way up north...

"Up north" for me means north Tulsa, and that means I'll carry a semi auto with a 15 round mag. Likely the Sig 226. It's a jungle up there.

It’s bad enough we have bobcats, coyotes and other wild
critters out here on the river. We did get a bear ranging
through here on its way north of here & I did see a
mountain lion one day on the road to town. Some hunter shot
the bear; but I don’t know what happened to the lion.

You’ve gotta use common sense. I don’t walk alone down by
the river any more. :o(

I trust’em; I trust’em to kill and eat my livestock, destroy my property, make it hazardous to work outside 24 hours a day, create huge vet bills for my dogs and livestock.
I also trust them to die with four 308 rounds to the chest, and a fifth to the head.

That is sad.

Near Yellowstone, there is an educational center where they have a few nuisance bears that could no longer be allowed to live in the wild. Those bears were lucky, since the center had room for them when they became nuisances. Most nuisance bears are killed.

The bears at the center are used to test bear-proof trash and storage bins. A tasty food is placed inside the container, which is placed in the bear enclosure. If the bear cannot open it within a period of time (I think 4 hours), the item is certified bear-proof. It is a tough standard. The center had some items that did not pass the test, like a metal bin that was torn on the side like a piece of paper.

I'm surprised no one has cited the real reason the bear ate the doggie: climate change.

Or maybe it was incited by Trump's rhetoric during the campaign. Hard to say which really and I do believe a federal study is in order.

They are as worried about them eating children on their way to school as they are dogs.

Polar bears leave attractive children alone?

Sled dogs are kept outside for reasons. The sled dog breeder knew of hte problem and left food for the bears hoping they would take the easy meal.

No esy meal, eat a live sled dog.

Those unfamiliar with sled dogs, bears, and the High North have done a good job of demonstrating their ignorance.
