Former CNN anchor: 4 things media must do when covering Trump
The Hill ^ | 11-28-16 | Frank Sesno

Posted on 11/29/2016 3:04:09 AM PST by dynachrome

But in the age of Trump, reporters have a new purpose, a more pressing social contract with the public to cover the president fairly but fearlessly. They need to zero in even as they broaden their horizons.

The news media should cover Trump motivated by four pillars of political journalism: be fair, be relentless, focus on substance and serve as respectful adversary.

How would that translate into actual coverage?

1. Be fair. Give Trump his due: He won. As his appointments and policies emerge, they should be examined in turn and in detail, looking at their component parts. Separate news from opinion. Be sure people know the difference between analysis and commentary. Get rid of pundits who are nothing more than partisan propagandists.

“They play a mediating role in our democracy, where we hold government leaders accountable.”

Complete effing lie.

What media needs to do is figure out how to sit down and shut up before enough folks get thoroughly fed up and begin resenting that the lying scum must be suffered to live.

I’m not advocating, calling for or even hoping for, but anyone with even a sliver of situational awareness can feel a serious sea change taking place.

The guy is an idiot. Thomas Jefferson was treated the same way? Really? he was there, I suppose.Do you think Hillary would be treated the same way? Trump is absolutely right about the press. Hell, they would not even pan a huge crowds when he asked them to. And we know from WikiLeaks of a dozen documented instances of collusion between the press and the DNC or the Hillary campaign. Pravda has no leg to stand on; this guy’s attempt at self-righteousness makes me puke.

"Where was all this for the past eight years?"

Really, post of the week. If they had done the 4 bullet points in this article between 08' & 12' we'd be celebrating the re-election of President Romney. Unfreakin' believable, now they want to go back to who, what, when, where, why, gum-shoe reporting after being apparatchikical shills for 8 years?

The problem with these suggestions is not their substance but the condescension of their author which betrays his unspoken assumption that Donald Trump can and should be treated differently than other politicians similarly situated because Trump is somehow illegitimate or unworthy. The assumption of the piece is that it is the public duty of the journalist to derail Donald Trump and his agenda.

I would be delighted if the "journalists" of the mainstream media apply these standards to Trump, providing, however, that they are equally applied to every other politician. How refreshing it would be for the mainstream media interlocutors to actually explore the data, the facts, the reality of public policy?

I have every, that Donald Trump can handle himself under these interrogations and I am equally sure that leftist politicians would be rudely exposed.

My first thought.

Happens every election when a Republican wins. The media will be the fair tough watchdogs of Democracy. But when a Democrat is in office, a city full of crickets and cheerleaders.

Free Republic and overseas news agencies are about the only media I will listen to anymore.

serve as respectful adversary.

Not doing so well on this front. Adversary, yes, at long last after eight long years of sycophancy. But respectful? Don't make me laugh. They're out of their minds with vitriol.

As opposed to covering any Democrat: Fawn, Fawn, Fawn, Fawn.

The bottom line: The media has been trumped and they don’t have a clue what to do. Trump will attack their twisted propaganda at every turn and they know that Trump’s huge audience will take Trump’s word over the media. Their credibility is next to zero and just like liberals everywhere they will only double down and destroy what little viewer or readership they still enjoy.

Mhm. They could have done this during the election campaign, but chose not to. Why would I believe that they would start now?

For journalists to be accepted as fair and neutral reporters of events, they are going to have to demonstrate that they have the capability to do so. Otherwise, they are partisan shills, regardless of their occasional claims of objectivity and momentary and rare bouts of introspection.

Wow

NOW they want to be a respectable press and do the job completely and fully. NOW?

What about with 0bama for the last 9 years?
What about with Hellery?

These people really ARE this stupid.

No, they will not ever be what they once were. Never. People get information from too many sources to depend on big media. Big media is the same size as a basement blogger - with the same degree of credibility.

I enjoy seeing big media fail. It’s like a 5 year election night!

So much winning....

What rock does this tool live under?

Among the most dangerous sounds to come out of Trump's mouth has been his disrespect, not just for individual journalists, but for journalism itself. Turning reporters from adversaries into enemies, inciting the crowd to the point that some reporters needed personal security protection during the campaign is the kind of horrific thing we expect to see in Venezuela or Russia or Cuba.

The reporting from the mainstream media is exactly that which one would expect from Venezuela or Russia or Cuba.

In 1991, I had to get my news about Whitewater and Bill Clinton's behavior with respect to women from foreign shortwave radio broadcasts because the mainstream media would not cover these topics. Now we have the internet. The press simply can never be trusted to cover the liberal candidates or policies and performance of liberal politicians.
