Petraeus emerges as top Sec of State candidate
Arutz Sheva ^ | 29/11/16 | Shlomo Vlle

General David Petraeus spent an hour meeting with Trump on Monday at his offices in Trump Tower in Manhattan and has emerged as a top contender for Secretary of State, along with Mitt Romney and Rudolph Giuliani.

He is praised as a politically astute military commander with extensive experience in Iraq and Afghanistan, two hot spots that will immediately be facing the new president. His CIA experience gave him broad exposure to America’s clandestine operations around the world, and he already has an extensive network of connections with heads of state and foreign and defense ministers.

Under President Bush, Petraeus led the troop surge in Iraq and helped persuade Obama to pursue a similar strategy in Afghanistan. He is still frequently cited for his work as editor of “The U.S. Army/Marine Corps Counterinsurgency Field Manual,” which laid out the troop-intensive strategy used in these two operations.

However, during the presidential campaign, Trump declared his opposition to this kind of intensive engagement and said the United States should stop attempting to build other nations with its intensive interventions.

A Petraeus nomination would also be problematic because Petraeus was convicted of mishandling classified information in a scandal stemming from his extramarital affair with his biographer, Paula Broadwell. During the relationship, Petraeus turned over his confidential diary to Broadwell, leading the F.B.I. to recommend that he be charged with a felony. Petraeus pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor. Considering Trump’s strong criticism of Hilary Clinton for her use of a private email address and server for classified information, a Petraeus nomination would raise charges of hypocrisy.

I think Petraeus, until he let his Johnson get in the way, was on course for the presidency. He’s an able man, and once again, you have to hand it to Trump to even consider the man.

Don’t know where Rudy will end up, but giving him the SOS doesn’t look like it’s going to happen.

Petraeus is a wonderful choice, if he really wants it.

I agree with the first part of your premise, but don’t understand why Petraeus needs a pardon...

There also was a President once who “let his Johnson get away from him.”

Petraeus was a servant of the Usurper Obama. He is dishonorable. A traitor to his sworn oath to defend the Constitution.

I contend that every single thing out of Obama’s mouth, goes thru Valerie Jarrett’s mouth first.

Can’t wait for the tell all books that are yet to come.

Would be great if Hillary wrote one, that was truthful about Obama and the night of Benghazi.

We dodged a big bullet, Folks, with the Clintons. The country is safe again. For now, at least.

I wake up every morning with a quicker step thanks to Trump.

I'm not at all sure of this but it might be that Gen. Petraeus is disqualified by virtue of his conviction for mishandling secrets from any office of trust of the United States. Nor am I sure that a pardon would remove that impediment, but I think so on both counts.

Coward is the better word, and I agree, would be one reason not to choose the guy. Then why is he even considering Romney who is a back stabbing POS in my books.

Petraeus got shafted by Obama and screwed by Hillary. I would love to see him in a power position as it will be a 180 degree turn from the past. (He would bring some balls to the entire State Department.)

Speaking of his CIA experience.....
What did he ever do to bring truth and justice concerning the clinton- obama policies and lies that brought death to his contract employees at benghazi?

Crickets

Could this be the reasoning behind backing down on holding HRC accountable?

If so, even refusing HRC a clearance or access would be off the table as well.

Why compromise?

The man is respected from both sides of the aisle. Obama had the goods on him. I think he’s a talented guy, who loves his country, and like Patton, would like to get back into it with another chance. In that sense, he’d be beholding to Trump, and probably very loyal yet independent in his thinking.

I like him ten times more than Romney. Have no idea what Trump is thinking with him, other than to make the guy look small and foolish by comparison.

BTW, good to hear from you. Where have you been?

“...a pardon could be issued to clear Petraeus to qualify him and a pardon could be issued to Hillary Clinton to cover the pardon to Petraeus.”

Obama and the democrats are not interested in pardoning Petreaus.

It is doubtful that Trump would tread water on selecting a Secretary of State until he takes office, or until Obama pardons people in the last week of his presidency.

I think his choice will be the mayor.

Patreaus is smart, clever, very short BTW, but he is a politician. He will cave and compromise when we need courage

I was talking to a academy grad at work who knew Petraeus at the academy his comment on Petraeus,’... when his boots first hit the ground at West Point he started dating the commandant’s daughter. You decide what that means about him! ...’.

If I have to have an arrogant elitist at the SOS position I’ll take Romney. I would prefer Trump find somebody else other then these two!

There were a lot of reasons the Democrats wanted to ruin Gen. Petraus. Remember the nasty Betrayous attack when he was winning in Iraq?

Wasn’t he involved with Bloomberg in pushing gun control a while back??

If so, that’s more of a deal breaker than the Broadwell incident.
