AP: Avoid using 'alt-right' without context

The Associated Press Monday released new guidelines for referencing the "alt-right," which ask that journalists use the term alongside its definition and in context of its association with racist beliefs.

ADVERTISEMENT The new guidelines read:

"'Alt-right' (quotation marks, hyphen and lower case) may be used in quotes or modified as in the 'self-described' or 'so-called alt-right' in stories discussing what the movement says about itself. Avoid using the term generically and without definition, however, because it is not well known and the term may exist primarily as a public-relations device to make its supporters' actual beliefs less clear and more acceptable to a broader audience."

"does anyone know who this “alt-right’ thingy is?"

It's about 10,000 kooks nationwide, who fall in line with the KKK and Nazi Party ideology, that the media tries to convince everyone makes up the entire conservative wing of the GOP.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alt-right

The alt-right (short for “alternative right”) is a loose group of people with far right ideologies who reject mainstream conservatism in the United States.[1][2] The alt-right has no formal ideology, although various sources have stated that white nationalism is fundamental.[1][2][3] It has also been associated with white supremacism,[4][5][6] Islamophobia,[7][8][9][10] antifeminism,[1][11] homophobia,[12][13][14] antisemitism,[1][2][15] ethno-nationalism,[16] right-wing populism,[3] nativism,[17] traditionalism, and the neoreactionary movement.[4][18] The concept lacks a consensus ideology, and has further been associated with multiple groups from American nationalists, neo-monarchists, far-right leaning men’s rights advocates, and people who oppose mainstream conservatism.[19][20]

The generic writings are largely Internet-based and are found on websites such as 4chan and 8chan, where anonymous members create and use Internet memes to express themselves.[4][15][21] It is difficult to tell how much of what people write in these venues is serious, and how much is intended to provoke outrage.[22][3] Members of the alt-right use websites like Twitter and Breitbart News to convey their message.[23][24] Alt-right postings generally support Republican President-elect Donald Trump,[25][26] and oppose immigration, multiculturalism and political correctness.[2][27][11]

It's a term invented by the left to pigeon-hole certain lunatic fringe groups and make the unsuspecting believe they are part of the right.

Incorrect usage: The alt-right in general supports Trump.

Correct usage: The alt-right is made up of violent racists who support the racist Donald Trump whose supporters are all violent racists.

It cuts both ways, though. AP is saying some groups claim to be "alt-right" to promote themselves. Far more common: groups will be labeled "alt-right" by opponents to discredit or malign them.

If papers and journalists do have to give context and evidence when they talk about the "alt-right" it would be a very good thing, but I don't know if the press actually restrict themselves in that way when it goes against their own agenda.
