Run, hide, fight: Ohio State attack advice is a new mantra

As police responded to the attack at Ohio State University, school officials blasted an ominous message to students with a set of instructions: “Run Hide Fight.”

It’s a mantra that has become standard at colleges in the event of a campus shooting. Students near the assailant are urged to run somewhere safe, to hide from the shooter and, as a last resort, to fight back.

A training video for students released last year by Ohio State dramatizes a campus shooting, in which actors depicting workers arm themselves with fire extinguishers and phone cords as a shooter enters their office. A police officer narrating the six-minute online video says to fight only as a last resort and until police arrive.

“It’s scary to think about,” an officer says in the video, “but an active shooter is something that we all need to be prepared for.”

Run, hide, fight, IS the correct approach. But your chances of survival are significantly increased if you have a gun

I agree with you, although I realize other people might have their own opinions about fleeing if you are armed. My first concealed carry class instructor taught us something very much like this, although he used different words. He said:
"1 - Locate the exits when you first enter a place"
"2 - Always be aware of what's going on around you"
"3 - Leave when trouble starts, or if you believe trouble is going to start"
"4 - Don't make yourself a target"
"5 - When it's time to fight, then fight and fight to win. But not before it's time".

And how do you know when it's time to use your concealed weapon to fight? Well, that's the hard part, I guess. I've never had to make that call, and I'm really hoping never to have to make that call.

” how do you know when it’s time”

Aside from the obvious, you know when people start gathering to watch.

Like rubbernecking for accidents, most people are suckers for action. Don’t be a lemming.

Besides, much better to get out of the area before the cops lock it down and you’re stuck there 48 hours while they interview and search everybody.

Ours was a 5 minute video, but it had the same message, and the same thing with the workers using a fire extinguisher to fight the terrorist.

I can’t imagine how you could stretch “run hide fight” into 2 hours. My condolences.

I like “Fight,Kill,Win” better.

Or, "Draw, Aim, Fire."

if somebody remembered to have one. it’s kind of haughtily unhelpful to assume this would always be true, and then sneer at people under different circumstances.

I work a part-time job once a year at a theme park, as a halloween haunt actor.

SO each year, I sit through 2 hours of this kind of training, learning how to put out fires, not touch bodily fluids, and other things. The terror thing is a new item.

And yes, they do pay us, so it’s something, although the pay is minimal I mean it’s a theme park so what would you expect — I do the job for the fun of it, and to work with my kids.

I had the same training video crap at work. My buddies and I were all talking about how fast we could get to our personal sidearms in the car (in Alabama, by state law, employers cannot prevent employees from having firearms in the car for self-defense and hunting).

Nothing ‘haughty’ about it. If you intend to safeguard your life and the lives of your loved ones, get a CCW.

Our community college had training from KY State Police last year with blanks fired to simulate actual gunfire(grown adult snowflakes wailed because it hurt their little ears) and KSP instructions were no longer lockdown and wait to die but, run, hide and fight.

A surprising number of pro-gun faculty/staff made their thoughts known on being sitting ducks to KSP and administration. Administration and liberal faculty was adamant you will be sitting ducks, no guns.

Our quick alert system is still a total joke. Last spring there was a report of a student with a gun made to administration. They were utterly silent. One administrator and a faculty member went around looking for the student and the pro gun faculty member pulled me aside and told me heads up. Turned out it was a knife. Administration is more afraid of bad pr than protecting lives.

For 2 yrs the director of safety has been going to run training drills for faculty/staff, still nothing. Our dept. finally made their own policies and we instruct our staff day one what to do, consider yourselves in your own.
