CHARLESTON, S.C. — A white man accused of fatally shooting nine black parishioners at a Charleston church last year was allowed to act as his own attorney in his federal death penalty trial Monday.

Dylann Roof's request came against his lawyers' advice, and U.S. District Judge Richard Gergel said he would reluctantly accept the 22-year-old's "unwise" decision.

Kind of a reverse Colin Ferguson situation.

What can possibly go wrong?
Let me guess, if/when Dylann is judged quilty, he will appeal saying he did not have proper counsel. Right now, his ego and mental mania have taken over.

Somehow I don’t see this working out well-a lunatic turning court into a circus...

I do not see an Academy Award in his future. His portrayal will lack realism.

Zero chance they will get to convict him and sentence him to death...in my humble opinion, because of this action. Jury will see this a stumbling block and avoid the death sentence. He’ll go for life in prison by taking this....I think.

If he knows he will get the death penalty, he thinks he may as well use the trial as a platform for his twisted agenda.

My guess is that he when the trial does come, Roof will not be acting as his own attorney.

This will guaranty an appeal for someone who should have been executed.

It may be a method to get the death penalty off the table. He knows he is guilty, the evidence is damning, the likelihood of conviction is high. He may believe that he has a stronger chance of appealing a death sentence if he represents himself at trial.

“This will guaranty an appeal for someone who should have been executed.”

He has a guaranteed appeal if he gets the death penalty with or without an attorney at his original trial.

“He may believe that he has a stronger chance of appealing a death sentence if he represents himself at trial.”

That’s not it.

Everyone sentenced to death has an automatic appeal.

Why waste a lawyer’s time with this. It’s not going to change anything. To save everyone time, he should plead guilty and be done with it.

So, he gets an appeal, gets a life sentence...how long - in today’s prisons - do you think a white guy, who killed 9, unarmed blacks, in a CHURCH, is going to last in prison?

That wouldn’t be surprising-there have been a few cases of criminals who are psychos acting as their own attorneys until they figure out they have sent the trip to death row into warp drive-then they suddenly want an attorney appointed for them...

Only a fool would have themselves as their attorney. So good luck to you.

Don’t worry, his lawyers will still get paid.

He will still have lawyers available to him and that means that they will always be in the courtroom and will prep for the case.

Additionally, while he could plead guilty, he could not be sentenced to death with that plea, it would have to go to a jury.

He will be in protective custody in a federal prison for the rest of his life.
