Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) is pledging to ban sanctuary cities in his state as other governors and mayors promise to continue sheltering illegal immigrants.
"I'm going to sign a law that bans sanctuary cities," Abbott tweeted on Sunday.
"Also I've already issued an order cutting funding to sanctuary cities."
Abbott was responding to a Twitter user who questioned whether the Texas governor could do anything to reverse Austin's pledge to remain a sanctuary city. During his presidential campaign, President-elect Donald Trump pledged to deport millions of immigrants.
He said during an interview shortly after his victory he would prioritize deporting or jailing any undocumented immigrants who were members of gangs or had criminal records.
He also vowed during the campaign to block federal dollars from cities that give sanctuary to undocumented immigrants.
Democratic governors and mayors signaled earlier this month that they aren't prepared to go along with the Trump administration's plans.
Virtually no one is hired in San Antonio unless they speak Spanglish, the hybrid Spanish-English dialect spoken in Texas. Heaven forbid that we should speak only English when many Mexican Texans don’t, and none of the hundreds of thousands of illegals do.
“Whee! Can I go home now. To San Antonio? And speak English without getting yelled at??”
Come home to San Antonio... Stay away from Walmart.
Abbott has been in office two years. He may not have been able to cut funding to uber lib Austin and San Antonio under Obama but he could have been deporting illegals for the past two years. Before Abbott, we had do nothing Governor Good Hair Perry who loved illegals.
ja wohl!
>>Soooooo why are you waiting until now to do this?
<<
Frankly, after all the crap he took from Voter ID and men using women’s bathrooms he probably felt he didn’t ae the political cover.
With Trump defunding sanctuary cities, Abbot can now just say “Texas tambien.” It may not be the bravest stance but I think it makes sense politically.
John Culberson (R-7-TX) has been promising to cut off funding to the DOJ for supporting Sanctuary Cites for 3 years...(crickets faintly chirping in the far distance.)
SO far I’m glad I didn’t waste my time voting for Abbot. I knew his opponent, Wendy Davis was a twit, she ran overtime on every question at the governor’s debate, had time called on her 4 times in a couple of cases, dodged most of the questions and went into character assassination mode every time, and those questions she did try to answer her answers were so rambling I couldn’t really understand what she was saying...
Anyway...so far Abbot has kept his promise to sing the open carry law now in place, it went into effect Jan 1 this year, now he looks like he’s keeping his promise to fight against illegal immigrants, so it looks like we got a decent governor this time.
I can’t wait to see what Austin, Houston and Dallas do when their money dries up...I think those are the only sanctuary cities in Texas but I may be wrong, San Antonio may be on the list too. If not it’s definitely over run with them, I lived there a few years ago. most people call it little mexico.
Oh, so now governors are going to put on their big boy pants and maybe start enforcing immigration laws.
I question whether the GOV can “sign a law that bans” activity that defies Federal Law?
Specific council members and mayors should be imprisoned under Federal Statutes for “enacting” said rules.
For the same reason that Arizona’s SB1601 was determined to e of no effect, so should these “sanctuary rules be the same. To wit, the FedGov determines immigration law, not the states (nor cities).
Hypocrites!
>>And force them to do what? <<
Withhold all state resources AND even bring criminal charges on the mayors and councilmen.
There is a LOT a state can do to a municipality. Municipalities are not recognized in the USC, per se. Cities, counties, etc. are creates of the States and subject to the will thereof.
If the State has the will.
So why did it take a Trump election to make this guy a patriot? Most of us were born patriots.
“And force them to do what?”
You seem to enjoy being a contrarian. Maybe you could do something constructive for a change, and answer the question yourself.
du bringst mich zum Lachen lol
So far, I've only taught a few German words to my 6 YO grandson. I expect that he's picking up snippets of several different languages from his fellow kindergartners, such as Japanese, Korean, Farsi, Hindu. He's definitely the only "white Hispanic" in his class.
One word I taught comes in handy when we visit our favorite winery: hochgewachs, "The name hochgewächs literally means something like high growth to describe the grapes fuller ripening."
I think he just likes the way it sounds...lol.
So why did it take a Trump election to make this guy a patriot? Most of us were born patriots and believe in American rule of law from the outset.
Finally someone with balls enough to take a stand. It’s starting and hopefully Trump will make it into a law, NO (ZERO) sanctuary cities. Make them pay!
In order to force the cities to do what?
>>In order to force the cities to do what?<<
Have the police turn illegal aliens over to ICE when said illegals are arrested. Not interfere with ICE operations when attempting to find and apprehend illegal aliens.
Sanctuary cities refuse to cooperate with ICE.
?? How do you sign a law banning something that is already illegal?
I believe one of the things that make sanctuary cities sanctuary cities is that the don't inquire as to whether a person is an illegal alien or not. So they don't know whether to turn them over to ICE.
Not interfere with ICE operations when attempting to find and apprehend illegal aliens.
And here is the only way that the government can sanction sanctuary cities. When the Supreme Court ruled over 150 years ago that state and local authorities could not be made to enforce federal law they also said that they could not interfere with the federal government enforcing those laws. So if there is clear evidence that sanctuary cities did interfere with ICE or whatever federal agency and did impede them in enforcing the immigration laws, then the government can punish them accordingly. But if all they have is that local police don't check immigration status then they'll have a much harder time reining them in.
Oh I like that. And hah I speak aleman !!!
