When people speak of Hillary Clinton winning the popular vote, they are really speaking about California. In that state, Hillary Clinton won 6,621,346 votes to Donald Trump's 3,549,576 as of this writing. This margin of over three million votes alone accounts for any claim that Clinton exceeded Trump in popular support.
Consider some numbers. In New York, Trump won 37.5% of the vote; in New Jersey, Trump won over 40%; and in Illinois, Trump won 39.4%. Among sizably populated states that lean "overwhelmingly" Democrat, California is in a class by itself. Trump struggled to get even a third of Californian votes.
Moreover, New York, New Jersey, and Illinois differ markedly from California because their tilt toward the Democrats happens on a very different landscape. New York and Illinois are pushed into deep blue territory by singular metro areas (NYC and Chicago), which overpower small-town areas ("upstate" or "downstate") where Republicans gather in strong numbers. New Jersey is wedged between the Democratic machine cities of Philadelphia and New York City and has a smattering of medium-sized urban centers with large black populations.
Only in California does one find a vast state with a huge population (nearly 40 million people) with multiple sprawling metro areas that all lean strongly Democratic or, at best (in the case of San Diego), just libertarian enough to be less than completely left wing. The San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, Sacramento, Palm Springs, Long Beach, etc. stretch across miles and miles of a complex and diverse landscape, hosting a stunning multiplicity of races and ethnicities. Yet everywhere you go in the state, you seem to find Democrats or Republicans who just don't strike you as all that conservative.
California is a different country.

Unfortunately we have learned from northeasterners moving to states like Florida and North Carolina that they bring their destructive liberal politics with them too.
During a text argument about the electoral college that I had with my commie brother who lives in CA last night: “Let me tell you, if California’s ends up dying of thirst and you end up asking me for help, I’ll FedEx you my piss.”
I meant it. If California tries to secede then I believe that it will end in civil war.
Kalifornia prides itself as being one of the largest economies in the world (6th iirc). However, if separated from the cashflow lifeline of the American taxpayers it wouldn’t be able to hold its own very long. Billions (trillions?) in debt and the leaches of welfare / illegals sucking at the teat, businesses hamstrung by regulations second only to those created by 0bama it has no place to go but down. However, save the portions desiring to become the state of Jefferson - these are the ones who are worth retaining for our country. Let the urban hell holes / sanctuary cities fall into the ocean.
Sitting this AM in San Diego overlooking a harbor full of US Navy. There is no way the US should give up on CA. It is crazy to even consider the issue.
And they’ll be plenty of them too, including tons of Demwits who will meet Reality up close and personal and say NO THANKS, GET ME OUTTA HERRRRRRRRRRRE

There is a reason why the San Andreas Fault is where it is and the wicked are running to it.

From the last time the democrats seceded from the union
If you want to take it one step further, the Hillary vote came from the 32 CA Coastal counties which encompass the large metropolitan cities whereas the 26 Inland Empire counties went for Trump. SO, if you slice off the coastal area bounded on the East by the San Andreas fault (If you get my drift), Trump wins the Popular vote.
REmove the tumor of most of the California coast (Keep SAN Diego and kick out illegals for bases) let the counties in Oregon, and Washington vote whether to stay or leave. DO the same with NY, and the Northeast as well as the SE Florida Coast.
THen enforce our laws and regain a,functioning country.

In California, only a cluster of inland counties in the north go red. Let them break away to form Jefferson and let the rest of California go or seek union with Mexico.
Let them go? I think not.
Let them try? absolutely, as is their right.
Once they understand that it will not be a bloodless secession, they will give up this notion.
The Union will be preserved, and it matters not how many secessionist Californians must die to preserve the Union.
It’s an interesting train of thought, unlikely as it may be:
Day 1 lights go out, and will not come back on.
By the end of Week 1 Gov. Brown will be strung up by his own people.
By the end of Week 2 There will be an unconditional surrender and widespread acknowledgement that California is part of the USA, and will always be thus.
By the end of Week 3 we may have a war with Mexico.

Like NYS, FLA is divided too. The N/E Libs moved to the south east coast, now that they screwed that up they are moving west, i.e. Dade, Broward, Palm Beach going to Collier and Lee. I won’t be around but I expect that in the next 10-20 years it will all be Blue and screwed up just like where they were.
Calexit is a good both for Californians and Americans.
1) Federal Military Bases ?
The US military currently has plenty of military bases in foreign countries. Some US bases in England have been ‘ours’ for 75 years. It’s a straightforward negotiation.
2) Social Security & Federal Pensions ?
Plenty of Americans living overseas already collect SS & Federal Pensions. California independence would not change existing SS benefits that have already been earned.
3) Water ?
Water rights and allocation of the Colorado River are governed by agreements ( treaties ) between the states. No change here.
4) Electricity ?
Independent California would buy power from ‘foreign’
power companies under existing power purchase agreements. No change here. FYI - about 1/3 of New Englands power is currently imported from Canada
5) Citzenship ?
likely to be negotiated, but there are currently millions of US citizens that hold dual citizenship. A non-issue.
When one closely examines Calexit, the deal breakers are mostly red herrings
If you let California go how long do you think America can hold Washington an Oregon? How long will be America hold Arizona, Texas, or New York? The question of secession was raised and replied to in the Civil War. California is part of the United States and any Californian or illegal alien who doesn't think so and fights to secede should be hunted down and hung as a traitor or enemy agent.
Within a week
California was “let go” by the Bush Republicans. They both refused to enforce the provisions of Reagan’s 1986 Amnesty that would have halted the further mass invasion by foreign nationals who ignore American law.
This was a state that twice elected Reagan as Governor and twice voted for him as President. It’s not a mystery why things changed. It’s demographics.
The Democrat left knows that replacing Americans with 3rd world imports guarantees that they will win every election. Why Republicans and what little remains of non-left Democrats stand back and watch this happen is one of life’s little mysteries.
