Veteran television and film actor Ron Glass died Saturday at age 71, his agent said Saturday.

Glass died of respiratory failure, Jeffrey Leavitt told NBC News.

"Ron was a private, gentle and caring man," Leavitt said. "He was an absolute delight to watch on screen. Words cannot adequately express my sorrow."

Any avid TV watcher of the last 35 years or so is likely familiar with Glass' face. He is perhaps best known for his Emmy-nominated role as NYPD Det. Ron Harris on the classic cop sitcom "Barney Miller," which aired from 1975 to 1982 on ABC.

Glass is the second cast member from that critically acclaimed show to have passed away this year. The irascible and iconic Abe Vigoda, who played Det. Phil Fish for part of the sitcom's run, died in January at age 94.

For a younger generation of TV viewers, Glass was a standout as the deeply religious preacher Derrial Brook on the 2002 cult science fiction show "Firefly," which was eventually spun off into 2005 feature film — "Serenity" — co-starring Glass.

In real life, the Indiana-born actor was a devout Buddhist and an active member of the SGI-USA Friendship Center in Los Angeles.

Cast members from "Firefly" and "Serenity," including its fanboy favorite star, Nathan Fillion, offered their condolences on social media alongside Glass' longtime fans.

In addition to his parts on "Barney Miller" and "Firefly," Glass popped up in memorable guest appearances on shows as diverse as "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D" and "Friends."

Shepherd Book: I don’t care what you believe in, just believe in it.

Anyone who has read the Book (Bible) knows that it matters *what* one believes.

The demons believe there is one God and tremble, but will spend eternity in the Lake of Fire with all who die in their sins. One must believe that "Christ died for his sins, was buried and rose again on the third day" to be saved (1 Corinthians 15:1-4). God desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus who gave himself a ranson for all. (1 Timothy 2:3b,4a).

Ron Glass didn't believe this. He was a Buddhist. Like the rich man in Luke 16:19-30 "[he] died, was buried and in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments."

There is no peaceful rest for the unsaved.

Barney: Anything happening I should know about?
Everyone: Harris is writing a book.
Barney: A capella. Pretty good. I had in mind something more in the nature of a crime.

My favorite character was Dietrich (Steve Landesburg).

To me a good Christian use their words to save the living and a poor ones uses theirs to chastise the dead.

As my Pastor teaches you have far greater chance to say to the lost “Let me show you how to live life in abundance” than to berate a lost soul with “You are going to hell.”

As my Pastor teaches you have far greater chance to say to the lost “Let me show you how to live life in abundance” than to berate a lost soul with “You are going to hell.”

Jesus preached to the lost the unquenchable fires of hell and the flesh eating worm that doesn't die. This is the eternal torment, which God's justice demands, that Jesus came to save men from.

One must first know why Jesus offered himself up as an atonement for sin. Men must know that they have a choice before them: (1) to accept Jesus' payment for their penalty, or (2) pay it themselves in the Lake of Fire for all eternity.

That is an essential part of the gospel. One is not "berating" a lost soul, but rather telling him the truth about the course that he is on.

Firefly and Serenity with their Shepherd Book taught a false gospel, that all one needs to do is believe (something). That is a false assurance. It is a lie of the deceiver.

It doesn't sound like you or your pastor do much evangelizing. Those of us who do recognize that the gospel will be an offense to many. We understand that we will be hated because of its perceived intolerance. We seek to please God, not men. The servant is not greater than his master. If they hated Jesus for telling them the truth, they shall hate us.
