Washington Post ^ | November 23, 2016 | Valerie Strauss

Advocates of public education in the United States have worried that President-elect Donald Trump would tap an education secretary who would speed up the privatization of public schools, a move that many fear could destroy America’s public education system, the country’s most important civic institution. Well, they were right about the appointment — and then some.
.
.
.
Seen by her supporters as a tireless, driven supporter of school choice, opponents say she is the most ideological and anti-public education nominee ever to be put forward to run the the nearly 40-year-old department.

Oh my gosh...an anti-Washington President appointed someone who wants to send the local education back to the local authorities. Good, I like the pick...she is an advocate of charter schools and homeschooling.

“The problem really isn’t the teachers...”

That’s simply not true! We are where we are today with our totally leftist-indoctrinated children, thanks to our RAT union teachers! But I will give you that the teachers would have been less effective in their indoctrination efforts if parents had done anything like the job real parenting demands. Now the problem is generational where the “parents” today were the one’e indoctrinated a generation ago.

Isn’t it ironic that the Dept of Ed may be the catalyst for the undoing of the public school system in this country? Had it been dismantled by a conservative administration or never established in the first place, school districts would have successfully operated under local control as they had since the 19th century, and would undoubtedly continue to do so in perpetuity. In fact, it is the over reaching and agenda-driven federal government which will be the demise of the public school system in America.

The left has had its way for so long they can’t comprehend principled opposition from postions of power. I long to the day the teachers untions are untterly destroyed.

SC & charters are a SOVIET MODEL.

Right. "choice" is a big tenet of Soviet philosophy.

And current publik skools (daycare)...where you give over your children to the communist, child-molesting, union-thug educRATs, for an ingrained K-12 socialist, anti-American indoctrination is then....what?

At least the charter schools kill the teachers union, and do not force you to send your kid to any given school.

"SC" (school choice) also includes vouchers, educational tax credits and home schooling.

Why do conservatives want to bring the riffraff into the private schools??

So they can be taught not to be "riff raff"?

I’d be a lot more afraid they’d destroy the private schools. Scores of Muslims and atheists would start attending Christian schools. Demands for what they teach would shortly follow.

My granddaughter had a crappy math teacher last year. She couldn’t understand what the teacher was teaching. I sent her to Khan Academy online and boom! She said...wow! How come my teacher makes it so hard? She was 15.

She is pointing out that Choice will destroy Private schools. They have already designated homeschool as a “private school” in law. She has bumper stickers on her site that read School Choice will destroy Private school. I am no expert but I am merely trying to point out this could be quite bad. I plan on going back over her u-tube again and taking notes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQZQ1HfQNbU
Also the homeschool education activists are really sounding the alarm on Choice. Nobody will get the money they want to compensate for self-educating their own kids. It is starting to be seen as entrapment.
My own thoughts are that after Plyler v. Doe the education was focused on the cultural needs of the IA’s nowhere are kids taught about their own American/European heritage. The lack of a unifying culture is a huge complication. It is a real conundrum. Perhaps we just need the late 1700’s model-educate your own-no state-run ed at all.
If you get some time listen to the full U-tube.

Only if they are forced to take idiots and savages. Just like higher education, they should be selective and "accept" their students on a case-by-case basis.

The disruptors and domestic terrorists can either go to reform school (what's left of public school) or the chain gang.

IMO unions getting students to protest a president’s election using the professors or even suggesting it should fall outside the scope of their job duties.

Oh, definitely. But it's really quite rare. Even here in Los Angeles, the Belly of the Beast, most teachers do not want this kind of disruption, because it makes the kids all hyper and hard to deal with for days afterward. Even our liberal Hispanic administration was doing everything they could to keep our students from going out there demonstrating and getting into traffic.

Where in the U.S. Constitution or even a state Constitution does it say that a government has the right to take away hard earned money from working Americans to redistribute to government institutions and unions that have no competition? And that our Children are mandated to go these school(communist indoctrinating centers) and our income is taken from us at the point of a gun to pay the salary for these bureaucrats and union member that don't have competition which would hold them accountable

Oh, I agree. I just know that, given that society wants children educated but for the most part doesn't want to do it themselves, if you take away the union, you'll quickly find that all you have is a pool of kids right out of college who will be fired routinely and replaced with more of the same, and the situation will get even worse.

One of the big problems is that for some reason, conservatives do not like teachers, do not want to BE teachers, do not want anything to do with any of it. So for the most part, liberals control the field.

I think she means via the overlay (the regs/requirements) on ALL schools that will end up on the plantation. Will go back and review soon how SC equates into CONTROL over Private. She talks about so many things....

Do not think your analysis proves true in practice. Schools will lose students and money if student numbers go up and excellence subsides.

At the moment, the balance is still very uneven. The masses send their kids to public school. The more attentive, involved, educated parents send their kids to private school, and a few of the less fortunate find ways to get their kids in too, and those few kids benefit BECAUSE they are few.

If the situation changes such that all parents can use vouchers to switch over to private schools, the private schools will have essentially BECOME public schools, and as such, the quality of students will... change (I'll put that delicately.)

Now, any private school that resists the lure of easy money and upholds the standards for enrolling and expelling will be okay... it's just that from what I have seen here in LA, they can't resist. Suddenly, all this money comes rolling in if you accept these "other" students.

And here's an extra grim warning: women with problem boys (usually single moms) that have been kicked out of several schools are particularly drawn to private schools. Just letting you know.
