President-elect Donald Trump’s transition team announces the choice of Common Core and charter school  supporter Betsy DeVos as U.S. Secretary of Education.

Anti-Common Core grassroots groups of parents and teachers urged Trump to abandon DeVos as his choice, citing her support for the education reform policies of pro-Common Core Jeb Bush and her influence through the Great Lakes Education Project (GLEP) in favor of Common Core.

Karen Braun who writes at Stop Common Core in Michigan noted:

I'm certain there's nothing to see here. Probably Breitbart just trolling Trump supporters.

Stop posting this BS. DeVos has already addressed this issue.

Breitbart needs to do some more research.

Publishing stuff that's easily refuted does their credibility no favors.

I’m still recovering from the Nikki Haley appointment.

I KNOW Trump is great and all that, but please LET’S keep our eyes open this time.

they were glued shut during the bush II administration.

I love Trump. He’s my NYC guy. But he is human and needs to be reminded that the RIGHT elected him, in case he strays.

Please hold the attacks. I haven’t said anything bad about the man, except that he is human and every mouth in the political world is chewing on his ear. .

Actually, it’s not a lie.

I say that to be honest.

I don’t say it to condemn her.

I think it is a good pick.

But it is 100% true she is a big Jeb donor, on the board at JEB’s education initiative with Condi etc...

People should not deny facts.

Certainly. I am not a supporter—period.

Since at least 2013 through today she has been a Board Member of the Foundation for Excellence in Education, founded by Florida Governor Jeb Bush in 2008. The organization is dedicated to implementing Common Core.

Her statements that she does not support Common Core are not credible. One doesn’t sit for three and a half years on the Board of an organization whose sole purpose is implementation of Common Core if one doesn’t support Common Core.

Haley is a useless two-fer. Trump is sending her to an unimportant post that strokes her ego, and the appointment lets him point to a (a not-very-capable, Rino) “woman” having been appointed to an “important post”. In the meantime, Trump has made someone much better than Haley governor of SC. Pretty shrewd. Trump will mainly ignore the UN and perhaps defund it some.

How is that Commie Core?

I’m sure others have covered this, but reading other articles and comments, Haley might not be such a bad choice.

She is removed to a position with no real power, so her Lt Gov steps up to replace her.

She is term limited out in 2 years anyway, so this gives her much more conservative Lt a chance to shine and be known to the voters for 2 years and can then still serve another 8.

Broadening the Republicans younger bench, while Democrats are still re-arranging the wheelchairs and IV drip poles on the Titanic

The DeVos family is on the forefront of the effort to end government schools and teachers’ unions once and for all. It’s the job of PARENTS to educate children as they see fit. The government needs to stay out of it. The only “education standards” should be those that individual parents decide are best.

Most kids should be home schooled. Where parents decide to set up schools, the schools should be run by those parents and paid for by them. I see this as something that should primarily be organized by churches.

I’ve read a lot today about her. Trump’s position on education is one of the things that attracted me to him in the first place. She says that what started out as a good idea turned into a bureaucratic mess (my summary). She is for school choice and local control of education and that is good. Common core is really up to the states now, but what I see missing from all these discussions is the fact that textbooks are published by a few, mostly liberals, and they are bought by most states. That needs to be addressed.
