GOP Senators hint at nuclear option if Dems block Supreme Court appointment

Republicans are vowing that President Trump’s appointment of a Supreme Court Justice to replace the late Justice Scalia will be confirmed no matter what Democrats do. Politico reports the unspoken threat underlying the GOP’s confidence is that, if necessary, they can end the Senate filibuster for confirmation:

Republicans won’t come out and say it, but there’s an implicit threat in their confidence: If Democrats play things the wrong way, they might find themselves on the wrong end of a legacy-defining change to Senate rules that scraps the chamber’s 60-vote threshold to confirm Supreme Court nominees.

“We’re going to confirm the president’s nominee one way or the other. And there’s an easy way and there’s a hard way,” said Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn (R-Texas). “They just need to accept that reality.”

“The Democrats will not succeed in filibustering a Supreme Court nominee,” said Sen. Ted Cruz, Cornyn’s Texas colleague. “We are going to confirm President Trump’s conservative Supreme Court justices.”

The Filibuster was designed for legislative matters only.

Advise and Consent is SENATE ONLY...the thought being that they were the wise men of the congress and weighed in as such.

Mitch will have to grow a pair

Trump packing Rupp Arena with campaign rallies on behalf of his primary opponent. That should do it.

Maine, Arizona, and South Carolina will make it 52-48 Dems. And Utah makes it 53-47.

I think the Dems are huffing and puffing for the reasons stated in the article. They have a number of Senators up for elections in red states in 2018. They can’t be seen blocking a nominee right out the gate. They are going to have a hard time not having losses in 2018 as it is. This election cycle was their time for gains and they blew it. Now they have to play defense.

Manchin has already come out saying he won’t block Trumps administration picks unless something really bad comes out. I imagine that will also apply to the supreme court.

Yup. For some reason, the voters of AZ and SC keep electing these two idiots. These two love the limelight, the attention, being “mavericks”.

I predict that these two will cause major headaches for the Trump agenda, just because they can.

We can’t forget Robert Bork. He wasn’t accepted on the Supreme Court because of Republican treachery. McCain, Graham and a number of others are fully capable of sabotaging. trump nominee even with a simple majority vote rule in effect.

I bet they only do that ONCE! Because, when their committee seats are pulled and their offices are moved to the Capital Hill gymnasium restrooms, they will start rethinking their misguided votes!

These old-timer, GOP elitists in Congress are going to learn a hard lesson if they mess with Trump. He was packing stadiums larger than some of their entire voting districts. If he turns that AGAINST them, they won’t be in Congress anymore!

"GOP Senators hint at nuclear option if Dems block Supreme Court appointment"

Until medical science perfects testicular transplants, the gutless coward GOP Senators won't do anything but whine like a Hillary snowflake. And Traitorcongress hasn't done diddly squat about the treason committed by Traitorobama. The only "nuclear option" GOP Senators have is wear a larger size of Depends when they wet their pants.

The ‘Rats would have more of an argument to advocate against the nuke option with weak-kneed republicans... BUT...

In this case, with a replacement for Scalia, where only a strict Constitutionalist will do, all Republicans, and not a few ‘Rats, should agree. No filibuster, or get nuked to smithereens.

Crush them! No quarter! The DIMs need (figuratively) stakes driven through their black hearts. Just look what they have done to this great country. They are shameless criminals and losers. I laugh at their powerlessness and at their malignancies.

Yeah, McCain, Graham, and Flake come to mind.

Add Collins, Sasse, and Hatch as well.

I just hope we don’t have John McLame and Lindsey Grahmnesty pull another “gang of eight” on us, where they join with democrats and agree to vote against any filibuster changes.

The democrats are finally starting to understand their position and what “politically castrated” by this election really means.

As far as any political power goes, they just can’t get it up!

It’s interesting to speculate how Trump might view the filibuster “rule” not only as a political outsider, but as a long-time dealmaker.

My personal “mouse in the corner” thoughts on his perspective:

President Trump: “So, from what you’ve said so far, this is a rule that we pass ourselves that prevents us from cutting the most favorable deal for ourselves? Have I got that about right?

“And then you also tell me that the other side drops that rule whenever it suits them, but continues to expect us to abide by it when abiding by it also suits them? Right?

“No wonder nothing ever gets fixed around here. Show me the guy in our camp who refuses to drop this rule so I can kick his ass from here to China, where he belongs!

“And then let’s get busy fixing things around here!”

Senate will be 52-48. The Dims need 3 RINOs to block rules changes since I assume Manchin (up for election) will vote with the GOP on this one.
