Amy Adams in ‘Arrival’ is a pro-life heroine for the ages

Once or twice a year, a movie comes along that is not only an exciting piece of entertainment and a shining exemplar of cinematic craftsmanship, but also a resonant meditation on the human condition. Such a film is “Arrival,” the best movie to arrive in theaters so far in 2016.

If you haven’t already seen it, I urge you to get yourself to the multiplex right away and save for later the rest of this review, which will discuss details of the film’s beautifully realized, emotionally replete surprise ending. It might be the most awe-inspiring conclusion to a sci-fi movie since Dave Bowman’s flight through the final monolith and into another plane of being in the closing minutes of “2001: A Space Odyssey.”

She’s not aging well.

She is a good-looking 42-year-old woman.

If they had made her look young and glamorous, the movie would have made no sense.

To paraphrase Master Yoda: “When forty two years old you reach, look as good you will not.”

(spoilers)
It’s hard pressed to call this a pro-life movie. Although she decides to keep the child it’s unclear if she really has a choice in the matter as time may be unchanging (that is, if she aborts she might end up destroying the world.) I also thought there were some hints of selfishness because she claims she didn’t want to be alone.

frankly I didn’t care for it. It’s not really science fiction. Nothing is ever explained scientifically from the aliens language to their technology to even the “gift” is just wish fulfillment that you have to take on faith and designed more for style than substance. (I bring that up because many reviewers applaud it for being a “hard science fiction” movie that we need more of) There’s little to no character development and you can’t call her the heroine for saving the world because she only saves the world through a paradox where she gives herself the answers after she’s discovered them.
Ultimately if feels like another Sixth Sense to me (another movie I loathed) Where everything hinges on the twist and the twist throws away the efforts of the previous 2 hours so the whole story is worthless other than the emotional drama.
OTOH - it might’ve made an alright twilight zone episode...

I've seen it and it's neither of those things. Didn't connect with or care about any of the characters and it, frankly, wasn't interesting and at times confusing.

And save your money on the Fantastic Beasts. Weak story line, movie went on too long and the special effects came so often they weren't "special". Just overdone. Maybe kids would like it, though.

No, not in the least! I won’t spoil the ending but I can assure you that it most certainly is not like Contact. Let’s just say that it is definitely LIFE afferming.

I enjoyed it Sam....

There was a sense of beauty mixed in with the political scare sense of urgency.

The creatures were not attractive by our standards yet I found myself drawn to them

My take: 1. She’s not aging well.

I think she looks a good 42.

It wasn’t written by a women. The screenplay was written by a man, based on a book that was written by a man. Doesn’t matter to me who wrote it, it was a terrific movie!

It seems that when Louis first meets Ian on the helicopter, he is reading a copy of the book she will write about the heptapod language. Is that what anyone else picked up?
