Donald J. Trump made coal a centerpiece of his campaign, holding rousing rallies with miners in hard hats, who he said had been neglected under eight years of the Obama administration. The strategy paid off, helping him score crucial wins in Pennsylvania and Ohio.
Now, though, coal may prove a different sort of symbol that is, of the challenges that the president-elect will face delivering on his many promises to restore struggling sectors of the American economy.
The United States coal industry and the jobs that support it have been in decline for decades as a result of environmental concerns, automation in mining and slowdowns in manufacturing industries that burned coal for power.
And these days, no matter who is president, coal is at the mercy of market economics. Coals No. 1 rival is cheap, cleaner-burning natural gas which could become an even more potent competitor under the incoming administration. The probable easing of restrictions on pipeline building and loosening of rules on gas exploration and production would mean more natural gas reaching the market.

China Doubles Down on Coal Despite Climate Pledge
BEIJINGChinas government said it would raise coal power capacity by as much as 20% by 2020, ensuring a continuing strong role for the commodity in the countrys energy sector despite a pledge to bring down pollution levels.
In a new five-year plan for electricity released Monday, the National Energy Administration said it would raise coal-fired power capacity from around 900 gigawatts last year to as high as 1,100 gigawatts by 2020. The roughly 200-gigawatt increase alone is more than the total power capacity of Canada.
By comparison, the agency said it would increase non-fossil fuel sources from about 12% to 15% of the countrys energy mix over the same period. Coal would still make up about 55% of the electricity mix by 2020, down from around two-thirds in recent years. . .

But now -- NOW! -- they are accurate and honest.
Gotchya.

Bleak Outlook for a Trump Presidency
The Trump presidency will make being a “denier” cool. The left will have to concoct some other environmental catastrophe to support unlimited government and taxation. It will be hard to beat the global warming scam in that regard though. As enviro scams go it is a doozy.
Trump doesn’t need to bring anything back online, that’s not his job.
His job is to remove barriers that currently stand in the way of ordinary Americans working out supply and demand problems in regards to energy, food, and every other product we Americans want.
Unleash the free markets and the need for government diminishes to practically nothing, except for the things it was founded for.

I seriously doubt either Messr. Krauss or Corkery ever worked a labor job in their miserable lives.
The few jobs that last coal miners have aren’t low-skilled jobs, they are 60K+ engineering and mine technology jobs. The days of the auto industry or mining producing large numbers of medium-skill, descent-paying jobs is over, no matter how hard anyone wishes for them to come back. The best bet might be retraining and moving vans, and I’m not kidding about the moving vans. Appalachia also has fairly poor transportation infrastructure. Some spending there might make the area more attractive.
As quick as it takes to reverse Obama’s policies that caused them to shut down.
“Get the EPA off of our backs, and we might be able to bring back some of the coal fired power plants.”
And stop the ongoing conversions of coal plants to natural gas.
Coal will likely never get back to where it was pre Obama... They literally lie, cheated and stole to destroy it... But it will recover under Trump, perhaps not to the level it once was but it will improve
Coal would be less expensive if most of the regulations were removed
At least Trump will try.
Hey NYT... watch and learn.
What’s the NY Slimes know?? From the same people insisting Killary the Krook would be president.
Wait till 2018 - Matter of fact, wait till this coming spring of 2017 when it becomes obvious as hell that he is totally kicking major ass. Don't EVER forget these mofos who bashed him every step of the way and who are still doing it after he won. All of these people doing that today are only effin themselves because THEY are going to look like the biggest fools on the planet by the middle of next year, like this "Hamilton" play bashing Pence. They committed suicide by bashing him. They exposed themselves as the racist mofos they are and all but confirmed that whole play is made up by racists which again explains why they put that racist ad out. Say GOODBYE Hamilton, you have been EXPOSED!
And with all of that coal available it will force Methane down in proce as these mines begin production again.
Obviously, you don’t restart a coal mine overnight, but in a couple of years I expect these mones to be producing again, and the cost of energy should conform to market pressures.
A+++
Also did the TImes forget theat their butt-boy Andrew (dumber than his father) Cuomo banned fracking in NY?
The Times staff and readers are retards...all of them.
The New Yawk Slimes=#fakenews. Trump hasn’t even been sworn in yet ***holes!
