House GOP Weighs Proposal to Bring Back Earmarks
The Daily Signal ^ | 11/14/16 | Rob Bluey

One week after Donald Trump won the presidency on a promise to “drain the swamp” in Washington, House Republicans will vote on a proposal to bring back earmarks.

The vote will take place Wednesday when House Republicans meet to adopt their rules for the next Congress. The House earmark ban dates to 2010 when the GOP won control of the chamber.

Now, a trio of Republican lawmakers wants to return to the practice of earmarking, which became synonymous with government waste and pork-barrel spending during the GOP-controlled Congress of the early 2000s.

Reps. John Culberson of Texas, Mike Rogers of Alabama, and Tom Rooney of Florida are listed as sponsors of the amendment, a copy of which was obtained by The Daily Signal.

Since you appear to be a Canadian, I am wondering how you feel about your government’s lack of adequate funding support for NATO? Only four of the 27 members pay less than does Canada. And FYI, of the more than $900 billion NATO annual budget, America pays more than $650 billion! I don’t know how you can live with being such a freeloader country! Only Spain, Slovenia, Belgium and Luxembourg are worse than Canada. Must be nice to be able to fund your Socialist government with our money!

Are they that dense? I realize that most politicians are lawyers and that getting a law degree consists of reading and memorizing court cases nobody cares about. Bringing back earmarks now would be like lighting a match in a powder magazine.

You’re no fun. What’s the use of gaining power if you don’t use it for your advantage? TTVGTS.

Frankly, I think it’s disgusting. I have used that example numerous times over the years. Some Canadians up here are often blabbing about our social programs, our maintenance of roads, public space, etc., but in the past I have reminded them that we live under the American umbrella protecting us. This frees up a lot of money to pay for the frills. In short, I agree with you. I wish we would put on our big boy pants and start acting like an adult country.

Having said that, forget about it happening with the foo foo boy we have now. President Trump should demand fair and reasonable payment from us. I would support that.

Gut DC. Cut spending 33%. Shut down entire departments.

Drain the swamp.

The snarky comment to you, was indeed in bad form; you and the Internet were correct to call me out on it. I apologize for my rudeness.

That’s so kind of you. To be honest, after I posted that reply I thought to myself maybe he’s having a bad day or just came off of arguing with some looney toon - that could have easily have set me off as well. Have a great day!

Looks like Trump is also considering support for earmarks. http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2018/01/10/trump-endorses-earmarks-despite-conservative-opposition.html
