GOP President-Elect Donald Trump Says Same-Sex Marriage Is 'Settled' Law
ABC News ^ | 11/13/2016 | Benjamin Siegel

Republican President-elect Donald Trump said he’s “fine” with same-sex marriage as the law of the land, calling the issue "settled" by the Supreme Court.

The comments – in his first television interview since winning the presidency – sharply contrast with his party’s orthodoxy, his running mate’s longtime position and comments the New York Republican made during the primary.

“It’s law,” he said in an interview with CBS’ ‘60 Minutes’ that aired Sunday. “It was settled in the Supreme Court. I mean it’s done.”

“These cases have gone to the Supreme Court. They’ve been settled. And I’m – I’m fine with that,” he added.

The Republican Party’s official platform, ratified by the party in July, opposes same-sex marriage, condemns the Supreme Court’s rulings and supports proposed “religious freedom” legislation that critics say would allow businesses to deny services to gay people.

Donald refuses to step into the presstitutes’ “gotcha” traps.

Isn’t that illegal?

Good point. We have Bigger Fish to fry right now. The gay marriage thing will work itself later through the newly stocked courts.

He is smart not to try to rip that up. What he needs to do, and what I anticipate he will do, is stop the flow of federal funding and stop the support of the DOJ to groups that insist on shoving gay propaganda down the throats of children and workers. He has promised to protect the rights of Christians, so I think that is where the legal frontier is. People shouldn’t lose their livelihood or their life savings for refusing to bake a cake. Children shouldn’t have to be taught that their parents and their religion is bigotry. Girls should have safe bathrooms and locker rooms.

In August of last year he said:

Some people have hopes of passing amendments, but it’s not going to happen. Congress can’t pass simple things, let alone that. So anybody that’s making that an issue is doing it for political reasons. The Supreme Court ruled on it.

However, here is what he said to Chris Wallace in January:

I wish that it was done by the state. I don’t like the way they ruled. I disagree with the Supreme Court from the standpoint they should have given the state — it should be a states’ rights issue. … This is a very surprising ruling. And I — I can see changes coming down the line, frankly. But I would have much preferred that they ruled at a state level and allowed the states to make those rulings themselves. … If I’m elected I would be very strong in putting certain judges on the bench that maybe could change thing, but they have a long way to go.

The federal, govt has no right to force a religious organization to accept a marriage. Similarly the government has no right to,force you as an individual to be accepting either. A business, however is a legal entity and will either accept the legality of gay marriage marriage or fight it in court.

it is not that this is a non trivial matter to you, but it is accepted law to the president elect. By focusing on the bigger picture there is so much more to accomplish. This is what trump brings to the table. He will not get mired down in issues affecting 5% of the population at the expense 95% of the population.

Right now there are bigger battles that must won. Trump was wise to not push this...yet.

Lesley Stahl: Do any of you want to say anything about this fear that’s out there?

Donald Trump, Jr.: I— I think the fears, you know, while they may be there, some fabricated, some not— are totally unfounded.

Lesley Stahl: One of the groups that’s expressing fear are the LGBTQ group. You—

Donald Trump: And yet I mentioned them at the Republican National Convention. And—

Lesley Stahl: You did.

Donald Trump: Everybody said, “That was so great.” I have been, you know, I’ve been-a supporter.

Lesley Stahl: Well, I guess the issue for them is marriage equality. Do you support marriage equality?

Donald Trump: It— it’s irrelevant because it was already settled. It’s law. It was settled in the Supreme Court. I mean it’s done.

Lesley Stahl: So even if you appoint a judge that—

Donald Trump: It’s done. It— you have— these cases have gone to the Supreme Court. They’ve been settled. And, I’m fine with that.

No president can do everything or satisfy everyone. If Trump can get that the wall built, get some conservative SC justices appointed and help restore American manufacturing, he has my vote as the best president since Reagan. I really couldn’t care less about gay marriage, and Trump didn’t run on the issue.

Trump doesn’t decide this matter. SCOTUS does.

Yeah, based on what he said to Chris Wallace, it sounds like a reversal to me. It could be he doesn’t want to cause division or fear and will put the proper justices on. Even then, he doesn’t know if it will be challenged and what the justices will do. They may just leave it. Therefore, he doesn’t want to cause controversy over something that is currently settled and (if it is an issue) will not be an issue for a long time.

“And I’m – I’m fine with that,” he added.

Well, I'm not fine with it, Donald. This is one of the reasons I did not vote for you in the primary and I had to hold my nose to vote for you in the general.

Live and let live, but don’t dare force it onto anyone - including churches, schools, businesses, clubs, etc. who disagree with it.

I might be a little rusty on this, but if I recall correctly, Trump very much believes the only rights conferred to the federal government are those enumerated in the constitution. All other rights are reserved by the states.

Personally, I think he would have been happier if this was dealt with at the state level, but is smart enough to understand that it is what it is.

His focus is on immigration, supporting Israel, and doing great things for America.

I remember him saying several times that business owners should be guaranteed the right to live by their religious beliefs and I thought it was in regards to gay marriage. To me that is the worst thing. Whether gays can get married isn’t at the top of my list of important issues, but forcing private businesses to provide services to the wedding is horrific.
