The mainstream media are reporting that President-elect Donald Trump is giving up on his promise to repeal and replace Obamacare, because he said he would be willing to preserve coverage for pre-existing conditions and allowing children to stay on their parents’ health insurance until age 26.

I have an Australian friend who is suffering great sadness and fear over the Trump victory. She got taken in by one of the articles going around Facebook about him not really repealing it...and she is feeling better as a result.

Should I tell her?

all that is needed is to get back to a free market-health insurance

The only problem with that is the cost of healthcare bears no relationship to the customer's ability to pay. You have an unworkable model when your product is only affordable to about 5% of the population, but is in demand by practically everyone.

Healthcare is just too expensive, maybe because we actually subsidize most of the rest of the world with our research and discounted drugs.

He just needs to get the program started to do away with Obama care. He can reduce the age thing a year at a time later. Once there are jobs out there for younger people it will be much easier to reduce the age.

The problem there is, that $1500 / mo. is not the true cost. Others are helping pay your way. It’s just not as obvious as the subsidies. Are you comfortable with that?

I suspect that the truth is that in far too many cases, coverage for those with pre-existing conditions was too expensive for almost anyone to afford. Therefor, why bother offering it.

“Coverage for pre-existing conditions, and coverage for young people, are relatively minor parts of the overall architecture of Obamacare. Conservatives have long been willing to accept such provisions as compromises, the better to shore up political support for dismantling the system as a whole.
Trump merely stated the obvious.”

This article clarifies it.

WHY would he abandon something three days after getting elected. This is a promise he made. He HAS to follow through with kicking this broken down can down the road for something better.

The joke used to be, It must be true; I read it on the Internet!

The updated version is, It must be true; I read it in the MSM!

Any industry whose business model is built on a system of third-party payments is doomed to fail. And it really doesn't matter if the "third party" is an insurance company or the taxpayer.

If anyone tries to reform our health care system without addressing this fatal flaw, they're not going to accomplish a damn thing.

No, do not tell her, let her enjoy the false reality. Soon enough she will learn Trump is going to do what he said he would.

During the debates Trump mentioned saving pre-existing conditions and keeping family members on until 26. This is nothing new at all. But, people will pay for what they get. Good Lord, will the negativism ever stop until we see the program.

Why don't we all go to the streets, fall down and cry now like the losers on the other side.

health insurance is not a “right”

That is the part that so many cannot understand. Once a person has been brainwashed to the point of believing that he has a right to have someone else pay for his healthcare you cannot reach that person with reason, it is a waste of time and energy to try.

“Media is SNL to me.”

Very well stated and a fact! Unfortunately, many believe it as truth.

There should not be and never should have been a mandate, either individual or employer, to buy health insurance. The logical extension of the individual mandate is that the federal government can require us to do just about anything if they so desire. The justices who said that the mandate was in accord with the constitution should all be removed from the bench and forbidden to hold any government office or to practice law ever again.

There is one main reason why healthcare in America is so expensive, it is spelled G-O-V-E-R-N-M-E-N-T. Get the government out and you will be astounded at how inexpensive medical care is.

No insurance premium is ‘true cost’. At least now I have some insurance rather than those who have to skip out on their medical bills and pass it on to those who are insured. Are you comfortable with that?

My birth defect should not be an excuse for insurance companies to refuse to cover me. And the truth preexisting conditions are no less or more expensive than new conditions. Example - I spend less on my cleft palate issues (zero in fact) and my hearing issues (both of which were resons given for me not being covered) than for my asthma (new condition this year).

Why bother? Why bother with insurance at all?

Have we not learned not to believe anything coming from the MSM?

Do you mean you don't believe Hillary Clinton is Madame President ?

There is nothing the MSM can say about Trump. They have no credibility.

These little media hacks are cranking out filler stories to keep the paychecks coming in otherwise they would be waiting tables somewhere. They've been used to leisurely following a know-nothing, do-nothing manchild president, but all that's going to change in January. Trump is spooling up on how he's going to hit the ground running, right now - he's not just waiting around until he gets sworn in, he's getting things lined up, now. Then there's going to be so much going on in so many directions so fast that the media won't know what to keep up with and cover first. They won't have time to be writing these jackoff stories, plus coverage and interest in all this "protest"/riot crap will fall off the radar since trying to follow and figure out what Trump is up to will take priority.

Put reasonable limits on “malpractice” awards against good doctors, hospitals, and drugs. Multi-million dollar punitive damages awards by poorly informed bleeding-heart juries add quite a lot to medical and pharmaceutical expenses.
