Before she left for work on Wednesday, Riley Elementary School teacher Christi Paulson said she had a bad feeling about how her students would be responding to President-elect Donald Trump.
The school is located on Salt Lake City's diverse west side and home to many languages, ethnicities and countries of origin.
"They're really worried about the [border] wall," Paulson said, referring to one of Trump's signature campaign pledges, "and about friends and parents and people getting sent away."
In her second-grade classroom, Paulson has two cups on a counter that feature a smiling, winking face with big thumbs up and a sad face with eyes on the cusp of tears.
Each day students place a stick labeled with their name in one of the two cups, which allows Paulson to check in privately with students who are distressed.

Yes, it’s all organized by the teachers. A news report on the radio today said that St. Paul schools (Minnesota) would have “emotional support “ professionals there for students dealing with fear and anxiety from the results of this election. I feel like I’m living in the twilight zone!!
I still love the reports of Hillary being up by 9 points in Utah. And the pollsters are just utterly baffled she didn’t win the state or the election. Hahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
NO!! The media is trying to portray the LDS as taking a left turn. It was all a pre-election ploy to “remind” them how butt-hurt they supposedly were after Romney lost, so they should vote for Egg McMuffin this time around or defect entirely and vote Hillary. It didn’t work. At my workplace yesterday morning, it was like everybody’s team won the Superbowl. It was like that for LDS and non-LDS.
It’s all coming apart for Tony. I’m sure he’s on a 4-day drunk right now.
