It’s a big plan, a plan the devil wished. Jesus Christ was the only real effective counter to it, a perfect combination of righteousness and mercy.
God wants us to see if we can understand that those people, as we ourselves, have been captive to something much worse than the Simon Legrees of the world, as horrible as they were and as terrible an example as they were. They were captive to spiritual powers and authorities of evil. They are no less suitable then we for a full on gospel thrust. Gospel isn’t “religion.” You can do religion all day to make yourself look good to people and yourself. Gospel is embracing Jesus and letting Jesus embrace you.
