Zombie Drillers: A Halloween Horror Story For Oil Markets
Oil Price ^ | 31 October 2016 | Michael McDonald

Posted on 11/02/2016 3:50:34 PM PDT by Lorianne

Investors may not realize it, but the Walking Dead is not the only zombie show running right now. The oil markets are at least as scary and have zombies that are much harder to kill than AMC’s popular program. While about 100 oil companies have gone bankrupt in 2015 and 2016, almost none of those companies have actually “died”. Instead, most of the firms are still pumping oil just as rapidly as before. That, in turn, has significant implications for investors in the market.

The 70 bankrupt firms are producing roughly 1 million bpd of oil – about the same level of production they had before bankruptcy. Those zombie firms represent around 5 percent of U.S. production and there are no signs of that production declining. The theory that bankruptcy would reduce oil production was always flawed. Producers have largely gone bankrupt under Chapter 11 provisions, which in turn has allowed them to keep producing oil and paying upkeep expenses, while at the same time shedding their debt burden.

It’s a treat, not a trick, for gas prices though

In '05 I rounded up two turbo diesel, manual trans, small station wagons as gas had gone over $2/gal.

Where do I go now to double my fuel economy again?

Good timing because it went to $4. Now in the midwest gas is under $2. The article gives me hope it stays $2 or so for some time. I would say your rigs are as far on the ROI scale as you can get. I wouldn’t push it any further unless it was with some small gas job.

As long as it’s above 50 cents a gallon, keep pumping.

There was zero sympathy from the oil industry or people, be they freepers or Dummies in the oil states, when it was costing me half a week’s salary to fill up my work truck. Drill, baby drill and pump away.

So the good news is: bankruptcy is saving our domestic producers from the OPEC/Saudi predatory pricing.

Sam's has Diesel @ ~$1?

Costco doesn't sell diesel (and I looked over at Sam's some years ago, but found no diesel pumps - maybe things have changed?).

The best I can do is to continue to maintain my Tactical Diesel Reserve where I can store 3 to 6 months of basic usage and recharge the reserve as lower prices present themselves.

Maybe I should frack in the backyard?

With gas prices so low you should be looking at a Dodge Challenger Hellcat.

I've driven a bucha stuff on closed/restricted, off road venues over the years.

Perhaps a couple of runs in a Funny car are indicated? I haven't done that, and as we all know, there is no substitute for horsepower...

It’s a damnable conspiracy to keep people driving their cars!

Ooops., missed the Costco v Sams nuance. Our Costco definitely has no diesel, but we are a multifuel fam and burn gas too.

100% gas would be good though. Only a couple of places around to get that bad boy in the tank - at a large premium - not a problem for the lawn mower though.
