I choose to believe truth. McCarthy led a circus around himself, and that met its nemesis. Had an actual discussion about the merits of a free-enterprise system versus the merits alleged to socialism taken place, we might have had a different last few decades. Instead socialism became something to scorn because it was simply declared unpopular. People who are simply told not to do something because a cabal of people hate it, soon become enticed to look into it... it’s human curiosity.
Anyhow... there’s a vast difference between a fad, and people confessing what has become logically clear to them. America has become fad-driven and it really took folks like the Clintons and Obama running hard into the wall (with things like support of BLM) before the foolishness of the fad has come home.
So no, starting an anti-socialist/anti-communist fad was not good at all — compared with starting an earnest discussion about the merits of competing social systems. Shortcuts don’t work on this level.
