Got My Colorado Ballot Today (Reality Check, pls.)
Mesa County Clerk | 19OCT16 | dsc

Got my Colorado ballot today. The heading for the block containing presidential candidates is headed "Presidential Electors."

I went down to the election office and asked them about it, pointing out that "elector" does not mean "candidate," and asking about the use of that term.

They seemed puzzled and said that was the terminology passed to them by the CO Secretary of State.

True story: earlier this week a local radio personality in my area stated on his live program that the Founding Fathers set up the electoral college because most voters aren’t intelligent enough to choose the President, so the electors are the smarter guys who do that secretly, because they’re the ones who know what’s what.

Some lady called in and chewed him out.
She said the electoral college is about disparities in population concentrations, not about voters’ low intelligence. She said nothing can fix that, and told him he was a good example. It was hilarious.

We do not vote directly for President.

Each state chooses electors who will actually elect the President.

There is no constitutional requirement for popular election.

A state legislature could abolish the popular election method and appoint the electors itself.

We have an indirect presidential election.

Senility gallops on. Anybody else want a ride?

No thanks. I'm on my own horse going in the same direction. :-)

“I would severely limit these ballots strictly to people who must leave town or are infirm.”

I agree, but CO sends them out to everyone.

“You do realize, don’t you, that you have NO constitutional right to participate in the choice of who the president will be?”

Yes, I understand that.

I understand all that. However, this wording is new to me.

I first became aware of the electoral college, IIRC, during the Nixon/Kennedy election.

Never before, however, have I seen this wording on a ballot.

I take to heart Edmund Burke’s precept, “There is no safety for honest men except by believing all possible evil of evil men.”

When, therefore, I see that demonrats have done something odd to the ballots, I believe that suspicion is warranted.
