CNN President Jeff Zucker on Friday said it was a "mistake" to air so many Trump rallies "and let them run" in 2015, giving the candidate an unfettered platform to call Mexicans rapists, support bans on Muslims from entering the US, and overall grow his base, which includes white nationalists.
"If we made any mistake last year, it's that we probably did put on too many of his campaign rallies in those early months and let them run," Zucker said at a talk at the Harvard Kennedy School. "Listen, because you never knew what he would say, there was an attraction to put those on air."

Trump increased ratings, which then affects how much money the network can charge for commercials. The higher the ratings, the higher the revenue.

It was actually part to the democrat plan. They figured that Trump would hang himself and destroy the republican party. Only the media didn’t realize that Trump was just saying what the American people were thinking.
They dont really live off commercials based on ratings.
They are not economically viable in themselves. None of the news media are, their ratings dont justify their continued existence. Its the same with the major newspapers. If they had to live on what advertising and cable fees justified by actual viewership they would have gone out of business years ago.
At this point they live on subsidies from their owners (or advertising really meant as a subsidy) for political purposes.
They are political assets, thats their reason to exist.
They TALK like they mean it about the old obsolete media business, ratings and shares and ad revenue, but behind the facade thats no longer the point.
