Poll: Catholics Support Hillary Clinton, Gay Marriage
National Catholic Review ^ | Aug 25 2016 | Michael O'Loughlin

Posted on 10/08/2016 5:02:00 AM PDT by daniel1212

More than half of all U.S. Catholics (52 percent) would cast a vote for Democrat Hillary Clinton if the election were held today, compared to just 32 percent for Republican Donald J. Trump...

More than three in four (76 percent) non-white and Hispanic Catholics would pick Clinton, with 13 percent choosing Trump.

Among white non-Hispanic Catholics, Clinton holds a much smaller lead, 44 percent to 41 percent....

Six in 10 (62 percent) white evangelicals say they would vote for Trump today, while 47 percent of white mainline Protestants pick Trump.

That comes from a new survey by the Public Religion Research Institute, whose findings mirror a similar poll conducted earlier this summer by the Pew Research Center.

Trump’s trouble with Catholic voters was foreshadowed during the primary season, when a group of reliably conservative Catholics urged their fellow believers in the Republican Party to resist Trump, even after he had all but sewn up the nomination.

Those concerns were renewed this week when The Hill reported on comments made by the newly tapped C.E.O of the Trump campaign, Stephen Bannon. The former head of the conservative website Breitbart News had accused the Catholic Church of supporting immigration reform only to boost its own membership.

“I understand why Catholics want as many Hispanics in this country as possible, because the church is dying in this country, right? If it was not for the Hispanics,” he said in March during a radio interview with Princeton University Professor Robert George..

Nearly seven in 10 (68 percent) of U.S. Catholics say they support same-sex marriage, up from just 35 percent in 2003. At the same time, Catholics are about split when asked if support for same-sex marriage goes against their religious beliefs (45 percent say that it does)... of the Catholic “Never Trump” movement.

About six in 10 Catholics (63 percent) say businesses should not be allowed to refuse services to gays and lesbians based on religious objections.

When it comes to how friendly religious institutions are to L.G.B.T. people, Catholics think better of their church than the American public does. Almost half of all Americans consider the Catholic Church to be “somewhat or very unfriendly” to L.G.B.T. people, with 35 percent seeing the Catholic Church as friendly.

The numbers are switched for Catholics, with 49 percent saying the church is friendly and 45 percent who say it is not.

While U.S. bishops have made fighting same-sex marriage a priority for several years, just 37 percent of Catholics report hearing the issue discussed by their priest in the past few months.

Catholics vote like the Mainstream Protestants who are their neighbors and live in the same part of the country.

In other words, they assimilated.

For years, [Mainstream] Protestants wanted Catholics to be more like [Mainstream] Protestants, and now they are.

The Evangelicals, who are so prominent today, really weren't much of a factor in the large urban areas of the Northeast where most Catholics lived for much of the 20th century.

LOL- of the 16 examples you posted Catholics went rat 7 times including voting for a Catholic who today would be a Republican (Kennedy), a post Watergate election (after voting for Nixon twice) and post financial crisis election....

LOL...you can't change the party affiliation.

since you believe Catholics were following their leaders were Catholic leaders pushing for Nixon in ‘68? Reagan in ‘80? GWB in ‘00 and ‘04???

Catholics went for Gore 52% in 2000 and 52% for Kerry in 2004.

Only three times have catholics supported the GOP candidate since 1952.

For whatever reason catholics vote overwhelmingly for the dimocrat candidate.

You chose to respond.

You remind me of an ex boyfriend who punched a hole in the wall over my shoulder, driving me to my knees and screaming at me until he was satisfied I was crying.

Go ahead, get the last word in one more time and show everyone the man you are.

A REAL Catholic would never vote for Clinton.

Which means you are judging your church which overall manifestly affirms even public proabortion, prosodomite pols as members in life and in death.

Thus what must be meant is that a REAL church would never treat/affirm those who she knows vote for/support Clinton and support her proabortion, prosodomite, etc. policies as members.

They are not Catholic, they only think they are Catholic, they like the cache and the smug, self-reasoned, satisfaction of ‘being Catholic’ among their ‘Catholic’ peers.

Well, they are CLAIMED as 'Catholics' by the Catholic Church. Why, if they are not Catholic?

Know the Jesuit liberal theology very well - my kids and most of my family went to Marquette, Xavier, Loyola... All of these “Catholic” schools are so Liberal they have lost their original mission of high quality education. We know many Jesuits Priests who are extremely far left and very proud of it. This has effected many generations of students at Jesuits Colleges and pretty well brain washed them into adulthood. Liberal slant to the polling not a surprise.

And besides the pope, for decades her own Bible scholarship has been much liberal, as seen in the helps and notes in her own NAB Bible.

Can you post that poll that the Catholic church did itself that showed much the same thing? I remember when they did that poll. Nobody can cry *bias* when the RCC itself did the poll.

of course he can’t and if he could he wouldn’t unless it furthers his anti-Catholic bias...i’ve posted evidence the polls he points to were completed by far left wingers yet he uses them as “evidence”....i’m sure you and others are like me and starting to believe this guy is from the DU and here to shill for clinton/obama...

Of course I can and did! Are you simply ignorant or willingly ignorant, or blind? As shown, the polls I point to as showing Caths as liberal come from virtually every major researcher of such, and include at least two Catholic sources. But you have not and cannot provide one single one that testifies to the contrary of Caths being overall liberal or almost as a majority, even in voting. Thus you simply have no case that the surveys whose findings you impugn do not testify to the same negative reality.

Thus those like you must presume to be more Catholic than leadership is, by excommunicating/disallowing those she manifestly affirms as members.

yes...he posted a poll from 2011 after i destroyed his earlier sources- a sign of desperation...the only liberal tactics in this thread is the omnipresent Catholic bashing from the thread starter and the belief that Catholics automatically play follow the leader...

Absurd desperation, for you destroyed absolutely zero, providing nothing to invalidate its findings, while not only did my OP clearly state that the Public Religion Research Institute findings "mirror a similar poll conducted earlier this summer by the Pew Research Center," and my first post showed that 3 months ago 56% of Caths supported Clinton, but i proceeded to link to year after year, survey after survey from multiple researchers findings that show this liberalism to be consistent, while you could not provide a single one to the contrary.

Put up or shut up.

My point us that you seem to be trying, as an activity in which you expend a great deal of time and effort, to impugn FR Catholics as being not authentic conservatives. You are using defamation by association, as an extention of your silly efforts in the poisonous Religion subforum to “explain” Catholic doctrine. Why don’t spend some of that time doing something that might actually please Christ?

I cannot ever remember seeing you post in the RF in my over 10 years here, by the grace of God, so some context is in order. It is the practice of certain RCs to use FR to promote their church, both in publicity and apologetics, and who attack Protestantism as liberal, and the cause of the downfall of Western civilization. Seeing as they are promoting a church as the one true one, which they argue we need to submit to, it is manifestly warranted that such claims be challenged, as well as their charges countered.

But true to form, they expect to be able to engage in their promotion of an elite church without that premise being challenged, for when it is and exposed as fallacious, they do as you do, and bring out the anti-Catholic card, and play victim like liberals, and often complain to the Mod.

Now i should ask where we you when we have seen such things as asserting that Protestantism is belief in one’s self, and
absolutely alien to Christianity, and that,
Protestants are mostly biblically illiterate,
intellectually dishonest,
evil fruit,
who don’t have the Holy Spirit, and
are not part of the Body of Christ, and
who have no foundation for their understanding of Christianity, and
will not be saved unless they becomes a member of the Catholic Church, and
are by inclination vandals who should be eradicated from the face of the earth.

But that Catholics never put down or challenge beliefs from protestants, and that,
there never has been a bit of anti-protestant bigotry on FR,
and have seen a Catholic teaching proven false.

that’s because daniella is an anti-Catholic/anti-Christian left winger...look at the start of this thread and see my responses at #37 & #39- he’s using left wing sources to disparage Catholics...he has a history of starting anti-Catholic threads...popular belief at FR is daniella is a DU troll.

Meaning your never-ending ignorant pro -Catholic, anti-Christian desperate argument that all the numerous findings evidenced that impugn Catholicism as being significantly or largely liberal are to be dismissed since they are or must be from biased, left wing sites, but which genetic fallacy argument has no evidence to back up this conclusion, a usual liberal tactic.

No, he's not. That would be reading way more into what he posted than is there.

He simply posted the data that FRoman Catholics continually deny. If you want to take that personally, then that can't be helped.

The 2012 voting results and 2014 midterms confirm the Catholic bias toward the liberal dimocrats. We’re seeing similar results in 2016 polling. That should be current enough data!

Your opinion only.

Since the Catholic church has never taken action against them and continues to allow them to participate in the church and partake of the sacraments, then they Catholic church considers them *real* Catholics, your opinion and other FRoman opinions notwithstanding.
