US National Weather Service Jacksonville Weather.gov/JAX@NWSJacksonville

The storm poses an imminent threat of tropical storm and/or hurricane conditions to SOME PORTION of the Warning area.

Heed the advice of Local officials. Be careful about rumors, erroneous social media posts and unwarranted speculation.

Major Hurricane Matthew Briefing Situation Overview

...THIS IS NOW A WORST CASE STORM SURGE SCENARIO...

Catastrophic Damage is Anticipated for Coastal Areas.

Major Hurricane Matthew is still expected to move DANGEROUSLY CLOSE the Florida First Coast and Southeast Georgia Coast Friday through Friday night into Saturday with catastrophic impacts expected along and near the coast.

A major hurricane has not impacted this area in 118 years, since October 2nd 1898. There is NO local living memory of the potential of this event. If a direct landfall occurs this will be unlike any hurricane in the modern era. . The western eyewall is expected to move along a portions of the coast with sustained winds 115 to 125 mph and gusts in the most affected areas! Winds will be higher in high rise structures in Downtown Florida possibly strong Category 4 to Category 5 intensity!

Some of the lowest barrier islands will be completely overtopped with large battering wave and life threatening flooding. Barrier islands are likely to breached and it is extremely possible that new inlets will be cut in the worst affected areas.

Please, Please heed the advice of public and emergency management officials. 40 people in New York and New Jersey did not heed these warning during Sandy and died in the storm surge! This will be a MUCH Greater surge than Sandy had along the New Jersey Shore!

Hang in there and be safe. We left Amelia Island for Atlanta yesterday morning - I went through Andrew in '92 while still in the USN and never have I been so frightened (and I'm a Midwesterner who's been through a half dozen tornadoes).

I wonder if Mrs. liberty_lvr and I will ever see our cherished Florida winter home again.

We’re in Jax, Southside, about 6 miles from the coast. My neighbors came over and said we are now in an evacuation zone, but most of us are staying. Across the street from our subdivision is not an evacuation zone so we still feel confident we will be ok. Prayers please for us.

That’s right - how else do the aquifers refill without some major rainfall? It’s not Mama Nature’s fault that too many people live in Florida in crappily built housing and in areas that naturally flood when you get lots of rain. This hype is ridiculous. My son lives on the Space Coast and so far, much ado about nothing out of the norm for hurricanes.

It looks as though Matthew is undergoing eyewall replacement, which will weaken the central winds during the cycle. It's possible the eyewall will not reform before the eye begins to interact with the Florida coast, which would serve to lessen the severity of onshore gusts.

One more positive: the latest radar imagery shows Matthew is moving NNW, and if that trend continues, it may veer farther from the coast than originally thought.

Unfortunately, the latest update from NOAA does not have it turning out to sea until Well into Georgia. They are predicting it will travel right alongside the coast, and they are concerned that the “wall” of the eye will by riding along the coast. The wall of the eye is where conditions are the worst in any hurricane, and they are concerned that the hurricane will be carrying a lot of sea water as well as rain. That combined with tides can cause what is described in the PP linked at the first post.

IOW, the worst case scenario according to the information they have now is so dire—I have never seen anything like this predicted—that they really want people to leave so they will be safe.

My brother in Lake Worth since 77 and my stepmom in Jupiter since 78-80. They’ve stayed for all of them in that time until now. They should have left this a.m. brother had his house and hers to secure, which got done b yesterday as best they can with the storm shutters, moving furniture. This a.m., he was.moving his car up to her house, then heading out. I’ll be calling them later. All prayers for those impacted by this monster.
