US National Weather Service Jacksonville Weather.gov/JAX@NWSJacksonville

The storm poses an imminent threat of tropical storm and/or hurricane conditions to SOME PORTION of the Warning area.

Heed the advice of Local officials. Be careful about rumors, erroneous social media posts and unwarranted speculation.

Major Hurricane Matthew Briefing Situation Overview

...THIS IS NOW A WORST CASE STORM SURGE SCENARIO...

Catastrophic Damage is Anticipated for Coastal Areas.

Major Hurricane Matthew is still expected to move DANGEROUSLY CLOSE the Florida First Coast and Southeast Georgia Coast Friday through Friday night into Saturday with catastrophic impacts expected along and near the coast.

A major hurricane has not impacted this area in 118 years, since October 2nd 1898. There is NO local living memory of the potential of this event. If a direct landfall occurs this will be unlike any hurricane in the modern era. . The western eyewall is expected to move along a portions of the coast with sustained winds 115 to 125 mph and gusts in the most affected areas! Winds will be higher in high rise structures in Downtown Florida possibly strong Category 4 to Category 5 intensity!

Some of the lowest barrier islands will be completely overtopped with large battering wave and life threatening flooding. Barrier islands are likely to breached and it is extremely possible that new inlets will be cut in the worst affected areas.

Please, Please heed the advice of public and emergency management officials. 40 people in New York and New Jersey did not heed these warning during Sandy and died in the storm surge! This will be a MUCH Greater surge than Sandy had along the New Jersey Shore!

Yes. But not so much that you have to be paranoid about it regarding slope. A lot of trees were badly damaged a few years ago by a really nasty ice storm. Same thing happened a couple of decades ago in Seattle when I lived there.

In Seattle I actually had to use a hammer to break round holes in the roof of my carport. An 8” ice ridge had built up on the edge. The amount of water that poured out was frightening. I can’t believe it held up, especially considering how fragile it appeared.

I over-design everything I build here. We don’t need permits for anything, even a house.

“It’s turning out to see, I just watched the latest radar, my bet is no serious damage in the US.”

I take it you mean it’s turning out to sea.

I thought I also saw some indication it made a fairly sharp turn right (to the East). Let’s hope it continues that way.

That’s the part I was missing.

Technically, it still hasn’t, is that correct?

“Catastrophic Damage is Anticipated for Coastal Areas. “

You can sure tell this is a left-wing government agency.

To the contrary, methinks many buildings are built to get washed away.
Comes a point where you get hit so hard that losing it all is cost effective.

“We don’t need permits for anything, even a house.”

That comment made me do a double-take.

I live in Eastern MA-—regulation hell.

A friend of mine had a stone patio in front of a house she had lived in for 30 years.

She wanted to tear up the patio and build a deck over the same area.

The city said no because it was a “structure” and there wasn’t enough set-back from the property line.

She fought it-—and lost.

.

The real danger is over-hyping a storm that fails to fulfill media/government expectations. The next time a storm occurs, people don’t believe it and stay put.

Bump! I heard SC Governor Nikki Haley on the radio yesterday claiming all sorts of horrors for Matthew and I thought this very thing.

It’s one of the reasons I moved here. That, and the annual property taxes on my 20 acre property adjacent to my original 12 acres - including two streams, a 40 x 60 barn and a natural well, are the price of a loaded family sized pizza.

Much more than NJ was. Any new construction in the past 20-30 years requires hurricane resistant windows, tie downs on roofs etc. The windows are pretty cool. To test them, they fire a 2X4 from a cannon. The wood can break the glass but cannot penetrate. Then they bombard the window with undulating pressure for a long period of time, again, the glass is broke but cannot come out of the frame.

I haven’t seen these tests live, but have been in the facilities where they are performed, once was just last week.

I think code requires these windows within 3 or 5 miles of the coast.
