Hurricane Matthew Live Thread II
NOAA/NHC ^ | October 6 2016 | NOAA/NHC

Posted on 10/06/2016 4:10:09 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Hurricane Matthew is big, bad and just downright scary, with iminent and sustained impacts to U.S. mainland. Florida Governor Rick Scott issued a state of emergency for all of Florida and disaster operations are activated. More than 1.5 million Floridians reside in current evacuation zones. Governor Scott has spoken with utilities across the state to ensure utilities are pre-positioned and there are no unmet needs. Multiple coastal hospitals have been evacuated. Meanwhile, feckless President Barack Hussein Obama is personally monitoring the progress of the storm.

Fox says storm of the century. WTH

Landfall of Camille was the worst. Of course we didn’t have Man Bear Pig around to blame it on me.

Wow, I am in Richlands and Duke is also my provider. Hope I don’t have this problem. I hurricaned’ out watching this with my niece in FT Pierce, stuck in her apt. Praying it don’t come up this far north, as I am only 20 minutes N of Wilmington.

Stay safe

My wife asked today about those ladies from the Palin Breitbart speech at Opryland knowing y’all are Carolinians

So hang in there

Being a Mississipian I know hurricanes

Camille neutered my storm bravado as an 11 year old a few miles from the beach

You are going to be spared by a front. Understand that a front will push these storms away from them.

You may get some good rain but nothing will stop that front.

Relax

Thanks so much. I just moved down here 2 months ago and bought a new home 6 weeks ago. Major Stress!

May God Protect all in Matthews path.

Do they also allow for forward speed of the storm and report less...or is it WYSIWYG? Asking, not arguing.

Historically, mets said to add forward speed. If this has changed in the decade since we have had a major hurricane, then I missed the update. Would appreciate if you can confirm current practice.

Second...minor point...on a Synoptic low pressure system...face the wind and center circulation is over your right shoulder. So at 3 o’clock on a storm moving due north, wind out of the SE. The wind closer to 4 o’clock would be moving due north.

For a circular storm, I like the clock analogy. You could draw up a diagram and post it because this question comes up occasionally.

Not only does sinking pool furniture in the pool protect them from becoming missiles, but they come out beautifully clean! Very useful practice during storms.

Yes, this was discussed a couple of days ago. 2004 Ivan was a great example of a strong storm bouncing along the coast of Cuba, rather than driving inland.

That NC clay soil isn't very forgiving. In NC, inland storms with combined rain inundation and wind have tended to cause rather significant tree damage, and in turn power outages (eg Hugo, Fran). That NC clay soil makes great bricks, but it isn't very forgiving for rain and wind.

I don't fault Duke Power for sending out a heads up call.

Yes, starting to get pounded with rain in Viera, north Melbourne. Still have electricity here. Just south in Eau Gallie they have lost power.

Amen!
As a youngster I vividly recall the destruction along US90 as we’d trek at least once a year to my mom’s hometown of New Orleans.

Storm surge was about 25 feet in the Waveland vicinity.
Years ago I read that some of the wind gauges capable of registering wind speeds of 200mph were blown away. A buddy stationed at Kessler AFB said commercial dumpsters were flying through the air like styrofoam cups.

Camille’s blood-lust couldn’t be satisfied with the death and destruction along the northern Gulf coast. She carried death and hell on to Virginia/West Virginia where close to 300 drowned from her rains.

Katrina is known as Camille’s deadly daughter for a reason.

FPL power outages

Palm Beach appears to have 40% of outages restored. 30% of St Lucie Co. without power. 43% of Martin Co. no power. Indian River 50%. At this writing, 22% of FPL customers in Brevard Co. lost electricity.
