Hurricane Matthew Live Thread II
NOAA/NHC ^ | October 6 2016 | NOAA/NHC

Posted on 10/06/2016 4:10:09 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Hurricane Matthew is big, bad and just downright scary, with iminent and sustained impacts to U.S. mainland. Florida Governor Rick Scott issued a state of emergency for all of Florida and disaster operations are activated. More than 1.5 million Floridians reside in current evacuation zones. Governor Scott has spoken with utilities across the state to ensure utilities are pre-positioned and there are no unmet needs. Multiple coastal hospitals have been evacuated. Meanwhile, feckless President Barack Hussein Obama is personally monitoring the progress of the storm.

I figured that I-95 in GA would be suffering (so close to the coast):

I-95 and I-16 closures

I-95 Northbound and Southbound is temporarily closed from the Florida line to the South Carolina line due to hazardous traveling conditions. I-16 Eastbound is closed at Exit 116/US 301/US 25/ SR 73. No traffic will be permitted on eastbound I-16 beyond this point. Motorists should use alternate routes if traveling in these areas.

Extensive I-95 closures are likely hampering fuel deliveries.

people in Cuba don’t have cell phones. It’s easy to forget that.

They take cell phones away from the RAT tourists?

You’re my news source for this Hurricane. Today will change lives for some Americans living in flooded, windswept, Georgia and So Carolina. Latest track shows Matt heading out to sea before hitting North Carolina. Fingers crossed that some will be spared. Hard to believe that Florida got off relatively easy only to hear of historic breach of old cities up North. Very sad for all who’ve lost lives, homes, businesses whether in impoverished Haiti, the Bahamas, in our own beloved country.

The big Myrtle Beach Springmaid fishing pier is destroyed. What was the longest pier on the Grand Strand at 1,060 feet, the popular fishing spot washed away in the heavy surf on Saturday. About 100 ft span is left of the structure. Previously, the pier was rebuilt following 1954 (Hurricane Hazel) and 1989 (Hurricane Hugo).

There are also reports of damage to the Surfside Pier.

NautiNurse, thanks for doing these storm threads all these many years. Here’s an on-the-scene update from southeastern North Carolina. I’m located about 45 miles northwest of Myrtle Beach, SC. Matthew’s eye is passing by just offshore right now, and the storm is starting to breakup and diminish to a Category 1 level. Consequently, the “national level” weather media are tending to minimize the danger and adopt a “the worst is over” narrative. Nothing could be further from the truth.

While the wind damage and storm surge threat is gradually diminishing, the rain is still pouring from the sky and will continue to do so till late this evening. The greater damage will be due to the river based flooding, which is increasing and will continue to increase for several days. We have already had severe flooding here for the past several weeks, even before Matthew, and the ground was already saturated.

As the water dumped by Matthew is added to that, the hundreds of rivers, creeks, etc. throughout the region will continue to rise and flooding will become even more extensive for the next several days, long after the national media’s attention has shifted elsewhere. The damage to towns, crops and forest/trees is just getting started. While it won’t be quite as bad as what Hurricane Floyd did to us in 1999, it won’t miss it by much.

The power is blinking now, so I’ll sign off, but just thought I’d pass along this information.

Just heard from an NC FReeper on the NC state board, in Swan Quarter, Dare County, practically right on the sound, not much weather to report thus far there. It’s hitting the Raleigh area with sufficient winds for people to worry about trees toppling and heavy rain, though. I’m further in and north, breezy, about 3” of rain since last night.
