Hurricane Matthew Live Thread II
NOAA/NHC ^ | October 6 2016 | NOAA/NHC

Posted on 10/06/2016 4:10:09 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Hurricane Matthew is big, bad and just downright scary, with iminent and sustained impacts to U.S. mainland. Florida Governor Rick Scott issued a state of emergency for all of Florida and disaster operations are activated. More than 1.5 million Floridians reside in current evacuation zones. Governor Scott has spoken with utilities across the state to ensure utilities are pre-positioned and there are no unmet needs. Multiple coastal hospitals have been evacuated. Meanwhile, feckless President Barack Hussein Obama is personally monitoring the progress of the storm.

Think of it as a tornado that stays for days.

Prayers up!

If people stay behind, it’s on Obama for playing too many games with forecasts prior to this moment.

But I hope they take this seriously.

I’ve never heard Rush Limbaugh more concerned about a hurricane.

If Clinton and Obama even attempt to politicize this, it will backfire big time and it WILL cost her the state of FL (NC as well).

If they excoriate the GOP governors, if they mention globull warming, if they go after the GOP for not allocating enough federal disaster funds, they should and will get creamed.

Politicizing disasters is the lowest of the low.

Wind speed readings can be misleading if rain gets sucked in. But barometer readings are pretty reliable. And wind speed increases tend to lag pressure drops.

If they politicize this, Trump need only ask, “Would you rather have the Clintons in charge of FEMA the way they ‘helped’ Haiti?”

This one isn't like past hurricanes. This one is skirting the coast of Florida! The WHOLE STATE! Heavy winds will be felt from coast to coast! Yes, we have TWO coasts! And, not much in between, as far as topography, to help slow the storm.

This one isn't as compact as, say Charlie ('04), and it shouldn't strike us directly. But, all of the bands/winds will play havoc with everything west of the storm!

Indeed. I am in the path of Matthew in north central Florida. But there is so much of the ‘boy who cried wolf’ syndrome when it comes to weather conditions, you tune it out after a while. Think global warming.

Storms like this, David in 1979 comes to mind ride up the Gulfstream it’s a steering current. What’s sketchy is beyond Vero it still hugs the coast. The atmospherics don’t lend itself right now to that. Hurricanes don’t really generate their own steering currents, that’s reading into the “Hurricanes make their own weather” axiom. Think a top on a table, you can make it go one way or another by changing the level of the table or the pattern of the medium it’s spinning in. And the as*hat whose beeing a tool in this thread..you know who you are. Give it a rest.

I used to be a met guy - hence my screen name - so I pay attention to this stuff. I’m watching TWC right now and there’s all sorts of ads - dog food, mattresses, MMA, and leaf blowers. On a ad to content basis, TWC has more advertising than any other channel, so it’s no surprise that politicians look to it as an outlet. All that said, typically on TWC when SHTF, they suspend advertising and stick to weather.

I can't imagine. We had a storm come through our neighborhood in July. I never saw official wind speeds. However, there were big trees whose trunks were snapped in half. Based on that, we figured that the gusts had to be about 80mph. Those winds lasted about 5 minutes.

I can’t be held responsible for every person that has some difficulty in reading and comprehending the language that I use

for whatever reason, seems you are being held responsible for promulgating that no one need worry until the 900 millibar metric is breached..which of course is not what you said, but it appears to be what some think...

Thank you for posting the hurricane threads. I have family in FL - they are inland and in the tropical storm warned areas & not in evac areas. Nevertheless, there is still danger and we are very concerned for them and everyone else in harms way.

As humans, we think we’re pretty smart, like to be in control of everything and try to be in control ... yet again, we are reminded how small and weak we truly are when faced with the forces of Nature. It always humbles me.

Prayers up for all.

Sounds like a microburst or a wave of high winds aloft where the wave bottom dips down to the surface. You can end up with really high winds in one spot and virtually nothing in surrounding areas. Wind isn’t necessarily as linear as one would think.

Georgia is going to have its own problems to deal with, from the nuclear submarine base to Savannah, and probably 40 or so miles inland. Probably going to be spots of damage as far in as Macon and Augusta.
