For Jewish Left, a Conflict in Brooklyn Exposes Bitter Split Over Anti-Semitism
Forward ^ | September 30, 2016 | Sam Kestenbaum

In Brooklyn, the progressive left is fracturing over charges of anti-Semitism.

A group of Jewish activists pamphleted an open mic event held last week at Brooklyn Commons, a progressive gathering space in Boerum Hill, condemning the venue’s leadership for partnering with “anti-Semities and white nationalists” — and the scene descended into chaos.

The crowd shouted. Cellphone cameras clicked on, cameras flashed. One man raised a chair over his head threateningly; a pile of papers, a coffee cup and music stand were wielded as weapons.

“I had never seen anything like it a progressive space,” said Michael A. Gould-Wartofsky, a protestor who was yanked off the stage. “I had seen it in neo-Nazi rallies, but never on the left at this tenor. People started … calling me a fascist and a Zionist Jew.”

Organizers at Brooklyn Commons, who protestors say forced them out of the venue amidst the uproar, declined to comment — and some Jewish activists denounced the protest.

3 3 Retweets 2 2 likes No one was hurt, but the incident comes just weeks after Brooklyn Commons hosted anti-Semitic 9/11 conspiracy theorist Christopher Bollyn for a September talk — a move widely condemned by leftist Jewish groups. The Commons did not directly answer charges that Bollyn was anti-Semitic, but did stand by their decision to host him — saying that the rental space was never meant to be a “cozy cocoon” for leftists.

The entire fiasco also prompted wider soul-searching within parts of the Jewish left, as activist groups struggle to distinguish political criticism of Israel from what they see as more deep-seated anti-Semitism. Anti-occupation groups IfNotNow and Jewish Voice for Peace — whose members themselves are branded as anti-Semitic for their criticism of Israel — scrambled to condemn Bollyn rhetoric.

On the heels of the Bollyn event, JVP issued a “policy statement” defining anti-Semitism, seeking to distinguish “real anti-Semitism” from “problematic definitions,” like the ones leveled against them.

Follow Rebecca Vilkomerson @RVilkomerson .@jvplive released today statements on anti-semitism-what it is&what it isn't. JVP condemned Miko Peled, a leftist Israeli writer, for expressing what they said were anti-Semitic views on Facebook. Other leftists pushed back, one condemning Vilkomerson as a “Zionist in the closet.” A few days later, the JVP dialed back its condemnation of Peled.

Gould-Wartofsky, who is a PhD candidate at New York University and also wrote a book chronicling the early days of the Occupy Wall Street protests, said that he would not seek to report the altercation at Brooklyn Commons to police.

He suggests that what’s at stake is competing definitions of anti-Semitism and the thorny question of when anti-Zionism becomes anti-Semitism.

“I have seen anti-Semitism on the left before,” said Gould-Wartofksy. “There are corners in the left that interact with the far right and see themselves on the same page.”

Not everyone at the Brooklyn event saw things from Gould-Wartofsky’s perspective. In a public Facebook post posted after the event, Mitchel Cohen, a Brooklyn Commons supporter, called Gould-Wartofsky’s group “white fascists” who disrupted a “gathering of mostly people of color” and “ranted at the people of color and leftists there.”

The group called themselves “Jewish Antifascist Action,” Cohen noted, but charged: “the so-called ‘anti-racists’… were as racist as can be.”

You are going to have to be less mysterious, all these things you know, you need to make public. And stop calling me names. It’s not at all productive.

It's not my fault you fail to understand that a chopped up video with no acknowledgment of the original is prima facia evidence of intentional fraud. I've posted the full video on Youtube, only to have Nazis report me for it. Any way, here it is http://www.seraphicpress.com/goodbye-sweden/

I'm sorry I hurt your feelings. If you are going to post Nazi lies, you should get a thicker hide.

I read the text of the link you provided, I watched the Vimeo Video, I found nothing new there.

It seems to me your argument is with that insane woman Barbara Spectre Lerner, an obvious Coudenhove-Karlegi acolyte.

Coudenhove-Karlegi,Ist winner of the Charlemagne Prize
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlemagne_Prize

...along with, in later years, Bill Clinton and Angela Merkel.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_von_Coudenhove-Kalergi

“...In his book Praktischer Idealismus (Practical Idealism), he predicts Jewish supremacy after the fall of European leadership and the subsequent dissolution of all other national ethnicities:[42]

The man of the future will be of mixed race. Today’s races and classes will gradually disappear owing to the vanishing of space, time, and prejudice. The Eurasian-Negroid race of the future, similar in its appearance to the Ancient Egyptians, will replace the diversity of peoples with a diversity of individuals. ...

Instead of destroying European Jewry, Europe, against its own will, refined and educated this people into a future leader-nation through this artificial selection process. No wonder that this people, that escaped Ghetto-Prison, developed into a spiritual nobility of Europe. Therefore a gracious Providence provided Europe with a new race of nobility by the Grace of Spirit. This happened at the moment when Europe’s feudal aristocracy became dilapidated, and thanks to Jewish emancipation.”

~~~
It seems to me that book might be what Barbara Lerner Spectre is all about. Is she aiming for a Charlemagne Prize for herself? I am currently re-reading ‘Inside The Third Reich’ by Albert Speer. Surprised to find that his father was a follower of the theories of Coundenhove-Kalergi.
Are you saying the Graf Coudenhove-Karlegi, the scion of a Nazi and Japanese Imperialist Dyanmo family, birthed Eurabia to prevent Jews running things?
There are reasons to doubt the authenticity of the translation, if not the quote itself
It's hilarious that other Neo-Nazi untermenschen will lie and claim Coudenhove-Karlegi was a Jew,
Other than that she speaks for the Swedish Government, and was trying to downplay the whole issue of Socialist-backed Muslim attacks on Jews. Or did you miss 90% of the video?
I'm saying nothing other than what you see in print and on video. It's up to you what you make of it.
Coudenhove-Kalergi was the first recipient of the Charlemagne Prize, later recipients included Bill Clinton and Angela Merkel.
The sponsors of the prize, the City of Aachen, refer to Charlemagne as the "Founder of Western Culture", and assert that under his reign, the City of Aachen was once the spiritual and political centre of the whole of what is now western Europe.
The first Charlemagne Prize was awarded to Richard Count Coudenhove-Kalergi, the founder of the Pan-European Movement.
The only thing I am personally sure of is that Barbara Lerner Spectre is insane. She said what she said, it's recorded on video. I don't care if she, or Coudenhove-Kalergi are/were jewish or not.
Now I suggest you stop hounding me. The words Neo-Nazi and untermenschen are simply offensive. I have no wish to fight WW2 again. I lost family in it.
Karl Marx's father converted to Lutheranism, no?
The truth about him has little relevance as Anti_semites will always find a Jewish angle.
Hoping to break the isolation, misery and poverty of the centuries, Jews embraced the new 19th century Emancipation and the movements ending in “ism”.
Jews embraced Socialism, Liberalism, Communism, Syndicalism, Radicalism, Feminism, Bundtism, Anarchism and later,Hippyism (Jerry Rubin), Yippism (Abby Hofmann) and many other “isms. The only movement THAT CARED ABOUT JEWS PER SE WAS Zionism.
Jews want change, Jews want Hope and that is why the fools voted for Obama because he offered both.
It is unfortunate that so many Jews fall into this mind-trap and never leave it. There are, however, Jews who understand the ebb and flow of history, the Torah and what it means to be a Jew. Those Jews vote Republican. Those Jews are Conservatives. Those Jews believe in the NRA. Those Jews support Israel no matter what. Those Jews will be voting for Trump.
But why.
I grew up with southern Jews and being from admittedly a rich family by then I knew a lot
I’ve known some Jewish girls pretty darn good to be candid...the Goldman sisters were prizes in my southern capital city
They were gorgeous
And they were all very southern....sweet and feminine and not bossy
But I moved to Manhattan I first noticed what is now omnipresent especially in media academia and Tinseltown
And yes I’ve known exceptions including a relationship with a well known Jewish feminist lawyer in Miami who told me once she always voted to limit Christian power even though she was no commie
I asked her why
She claimed we had proven what we were capable of in Germany
I’m like but those were not southern baptists honey....honey just to piss her off....I told her look how we support Israel don’t you care?
Not as much as some pretend....anyhow she had melting hazel eyes and huge boobs and great hair and loved me cause is was a redneck goy who intrigued her and she felt safe with and consumed by
All good women come at a price....we still trade hannakuh and Christmas cards
I also always noticed Israelis are more like southern Jews....more practical and less anti pluralistic
There is something in the water with Eastern European immigrants and Scandinavians too...Jewish or not
More likely to be leftist...statist
And humanist
I don’t think Jews will ever be like southern baptists
Btw
I once liked Abbie
His life was sad
He died despondent and a jester without a movement
Israelis are a new breed of Jew and are like your Southern baptists. Israelis live with terror, warfare and death everyday hence they are practical realists. American Jewry tends to be Milquetoast because life is to damn good and they are as malleable as soft chocolate chip cookies. always wanting to please their non-Jewish brethren.
Israelis must survive and have learned the hard way to made of steel...or die.
Israeli babes blow their American Jewish counterparts away. Israeli women are gorgeous, smart and tough.
Very common actually these days at synagogues. Usually intense private security, with either cops or police car presence especially on the high holidays. Sad but true. All of it is 100% safer than in Europe.
Dear justice,
You said it yourself ... “Marx had Jewish ancestry”
So, as i wrote, it is the BLOODLINE, not what religious sect, defined him.
As far as i was taught, and has held true, he was a Jew.
Dear jj,
re: “So you believe there was something in Karl Marx’ DNA that made him a Leftist?”
The titles Jew and Communist, are like the terms Pagan and witch.
Not every Jew is a Communist. Karl Marx wrote “Das Kapital’, which is the Communist Manifesto, (which is what Lenin adopted), and is a Jew.
“Not all pagans are witches, but a majority of witches are pagan.”
Now, jj, have YOU ever read ‘Das Kapital’?
And, before you ask, I have.
I learned German as a young fellow so I could read Marx and Herman Hesse in the original. Marx had no awareness of himself as a Jew, and had no Jewish teachers that I can think of.
I think you might be part of a Jewish conspiracy to give Jewish conspiracies a bad name.
