Outdoor gear giants Bass Pro and Cabela's will combine in $5.5 billion deal announced Monday.
The deal will give Cabela's shareholders $65.50 cash per share, but it creates uncertainty about jobs in the retailer's home state of Nebraska. The combined companies plan to keep some operations in Sidney and Lincoln, Nebraska, but it's not immediately clear how many jobs might be lost.
Bass Pro CEO Johnny Morris says he hopes to continue growing the Cabela's brand alongside his own Springfield, Missouri, based chain.

Who needs Anti-Trust Laws?
Crap. I like Cabela’s considerably better than Bass Pro.
Too bad...thats the end of Cabelas. Bass Pro shops are WAY over priced and under whelming. Itll be good for the mom/pop shos tho.
Guess I’d better hurry and grab that lamp I’ve been eyeing. These kinds of “mergers” always seem to trim off the peripheral product lines first.
I agree I like Cabela’s better but than Bass Pro.
I totally agree with your assessment.
Well there you go the bigger fish gobbling up the smaller. If anyone can remember Cabella bought Gander Mtn.
Up until about twelve years ago, anything you bought at Cabelas was of outstanding quality.Especially their coats and other clothing. Then, suddenly, everything became cheaper in quality but not price. That’s when I stopped shopping much there.

Lincoln will be fine, but I think Sidney is some po dunk cow town between Cheyenne Wyoming and Lincoln will be destroyed. Looking at my recent Cabelas purchase it seems to be the corporate HQ and shipping town, google says it only has about 7 thousand people, wow I would not want to live there.
My son works at Cabela’s, they have been working him like a dog, he’s covering three departments and totally stressed out. He told me tons of trucks arrive each day and they’re moving a ton of product yet are running on a skeleton crew. This must be the reason, to maximize profits for the buyout. However, the employees are really, really stressed out at his store. Cabela’s are very cool if you’ve never been to one.
I don’t see how this is anti-trust material. There’s still Gander Mountain and Field and Stream, Plus Walmart, Dicks, a bazillion bait and tackle shops, RV/utility dealers, boat dealers, gun shops, REI, Eddie Bauer, etc.
Anything to be had at Cabelas or Bass Pro can be found elsewhere.
All we have here in KC is Cabelas and Bass Pro.
Well, Guess we are down to one.
Cabelas in KC is a Huge Tourist Attraction for us.
We have a Bass Pro in Olathe, that isn't so much.....
What is more controversial, a Ford vs. Chevy thread or a Cabelas vs. Bass Pro thread?
I’ll go with Cabelas by a thin .22LR margin. Both stores are overpriced, but I could get ammo at Cabelas for slightly less. When I walk around Bass Pro looking at shit I can’t afford, I see the giant fish tank and all the other crap and know why.
yes, but I have a Pro Bass about 20 miles from me while the nearest Cabella’s is hundreds.
Though I’d prefer a Cabella’s/
Beat me to it... again... :)
The answer to that is simple. As many jobs as Bass Pro Shops can do away with.
Disappointed... Cabelas was a Nebraska legend . I remember it as a boy many years ago. Mail order I believe.
If I recall correctly every country kid who could scrape up a few dollars could join the NRA as a youth member. You could buy a brick of 22’s for about 4 dollars at a big towns Western-Auto. Simpler times back then..
Sorry just an old man reminiscing !!
Which is all Cabelas was in the 70s when I’d go to their store in Sidney.
Which is why I always look like a lost Warsaw Pact soldier whenever I'm enjoying the great outdoors.
