The phrase “natural born” has nothing to do with the place of birth. In the 17th century, “natural born” was a polite way of indicating who was the “biological father.” (The biological mother is apparent.)
The Founding Fathers had intense discussions about what degree a monarchy, aristocracy or other birth-determined status should have in the new country. As the Republic took shape, a consensus grew, more and more away from titles and inherited class. Hence, they wanted to distinguish that the president was elected on his own merits, not by a dynastic succession or entitlement.
“Natural born” means the presidency is “not inherited.” An illegitimate but “natural born” son of a citizen (his biological father, if not legal) therefore is qualified to run for president. This levels the playing field and removes privilege, wealth or inherited title as a factor in the democratic process.
