The Obama Gun "Super Owner" - New Study Finds 50% Of Guns Owned By Just 3% Of Population

A recent Harvard study of the demographics of gun ownership in the United States yielded a fairly shocking discovery, namely the emergence of the Obama gun "Super Owner." The study, entitled "The Stock and Flow of US Firearms: Results from the 2015 National Firearms Survey", was conducted by the Harvard School of Public Health and found that just 14% of all gun owners, or 7.6mm adults and 3% of the total U.S. population, possessed 50% of all guns owned by civilians in the country. Moreover, with a total stock of 270mm civilian-owned guns in the U.S., that implies that these "super owners" possess an average of nearly 18 guns per person.

Gun owning respondents owned an average of 4.85 firearms (range: 1-140); the median gun owner reported owning approximately two guns. As can be seen in Figure 3, approximately half (48%) of gun owners report owning 1 or 2 guns, accounting for 14% of the total US gun stock, while those who own 10 or more guns (8% of all gun owners), own 39% of the gun stock. Put another way, one half of the gun stock (~130 million guns) is owned by approximately 86% of gun owners, while the other half is owned by 14% of gun owners (14% of gun owners equals 7.6 million adults, or 3% of the adult US population).

Another startling discovery in the data, though "oddly" not highlighted in the report, is that the surge in gun ownership per capita seemed to coincide with the start of the Obama presidency and growing rhetoric over new gun regulations.

My Dad had over 12 guns, this doesn’t impress me.

My Dad was a hunter, he had different guns for different game and guns for target practice. He also had spare guns for visitors and friends to go out with him.

I had a deer rifle on consignment at a rather large local gun shop since December and it hadn’t sold so I went to pick it up. The owner apologized for nor being able to sell it. He said he’d sold thousands of handguns and msr’s but the guy I passed walking in the door was only the THIRD hunting rifle he had sold all year so far.
People that hunt already have a deer rifle. People that don’t hunt dont need one.
But he’s selling lots of firearms none the less.

superior firepower
. . . might be a chimera. Fortunately, that is not necessary.
A former fighter pilot told of an engagement he fought over Korea. It was the first that he, flying an F-86, had ever seen of the then-new MIG-17. He explained that the MIG-15s he was used to opposing were known to have superior thrust-weight ratio, and performance at high altitude. It was much safer to engage them in denser air at lower altitudes - and at high speed. If you saw a MIG-15 at high altitude, you let him be. And he would let you be, as well, if you maintained high speed.

The reason for the latter, Don explained, was that the F-86 had hydraulic flight controls - “power steering” - and the MIG-15 did not. The result was that if the MIG dived down to tangle with the Sabrejets "it took two men and a boy” to operate the flight controls. Thus the MIG, although it had the advantage in wing area to weight ratio, could be outmaneuvered at the Saberjet pilot’s preferred flight condition.

But the MIG-17 did have “power steering” - and its pilot did come down to tangle with Don where a MIG-15 pilot durst not. Don was very experienced and confident, and the two planes took two passes at each other. Notwithstanding his own expertise, he found himself having gained no advantage at all after the second pass.

At that point, Don said, “We both got the same idea at the same time - this was too close to being a fair fight."

Total BS. We all know gun owners and none of us can say that 3% of them own 50% of the guns we know of. None of us.

According to the Congressional Research Service, there are roughly twice as many guns per capita in the United States as there were in 1968: more than 300 million guns in all. Gun sales have increased in recent years.Jan 5, 2016

Sorry, but if Harvard contacted me, asking how many guns I own, under no conceivable circumstance would I answer them.

If three percent of our populace owned 50% of the privately owned weapons, that could mean that over 9.5 million people would have to own 13.684 weapons each on average.

Well I must be a one percenter then!

That paltry 13.684 number is shamefully low. I have 'ten-ish' AR-15s in various configurations alone, not to mention real rifles of calibers starting with a 3 or more, shotguns and pistolas, SBRs, full autos and suppressed plinkers.

I just moved and friends helping me found several 'items' under various couches I forgot I even had.

Sheesh, I've GIVEN over 13 guns away to young adults in the last 2 years at least.

I do believe 97% of the population has less that 13.684 guns.

The other 3 percent...Hmmmn.
