If the riots are already happening, it's really too late to be thinking about firearms, unless you are not in the vicinity of the rioting.

A gun and ammunition will not protect you, except in the most general way (i.e., just having it visible will deter many criminals). You need to expend ammunition on the range preferably with someone who is already experienced so you hopefully will not learn bad habits. You also have to spend some time in thought. Mental preparation is as essential as practice. Without it you will most likely make bad decisions that could well end up doing you as much if not more damage than a few random barbarians.
