Trump is trying to stay out of that argument for now, and there is some merit to it. “Useful idiots” comes to mind. Let’s address the “ignorance” problem first and then be concerned with the “willful malice” problem after that.

Even if it’s willful malice, it’s still stupid, because they believe they will be spared, rewarded even. It’s like the evil priests in a Conan comic, letting out the elder god Chthulhululhu in order to earn its gratitude, and getting their heads bitten off instead.
