Sailor's surprise birth while deployed on USS Eisenhower was a rare event. But it wasn't a first.
The Virginian-Pilot ^ | September 15, 2016 | Brock Vergakis

Word quickly spread around the world this week that a sailor gave birth aboard an aircraft carrier in the Persian Gulf, and for good reason.

Births aboard U.S. warships are rare. Births aboard a ship on a combat deployment are rarer still.

But they’re not unheard of. The Navy does not keep statistics on the number of children born aboard its ships, but archived media reports show this is not the first time a sailor has had a baby at sea or aboard a ship in a combat zone. In one instance, a child died a day after being born in secret and smuggled off the ship so nobody would know about it.

Absolutely spot on. We waited nearly a year with a gapped billet for a certain weapon system tech. The replacement (a Fire Controlman First Class) reported on a Monday morning and was gone by Wednesday afternoon - pregnant. Big Navy will tell you they don’t keep those stats - because the news is abysmal.

I’m retired Air Force and the problem was less severe for us, since we have a lot of admin and support billets where female airmen can continue to serve during the pregnancy. But it does impact aircrew positions and maintenance billets, where a pregnant woman can no longer perform the full range of assigned tasks, and someone else has to pick up the slack.

I now live in the largest Navy community in the country. Can’t count the number of Chiefs, Senior Chiefs and Master Chiefs who just shake their head when you mention pregnant sailors in sea billets. It’s a given that a certain percentage will get pregnant before a deployment, leaving their supervisors and division chiefs to figure out a solution. And of course, you can’t hold the “pregnancy” against the female sailor, so they keep advancing, along with their peers.

Someone help me out here, how does a woman not know she is pregnant?

No period for 9 months, weight gain, distended belly, etc?

“If I were about 2000 sailors would be looking at court martial and a minimum of 5 years at Portsmouth Naval Prison.”

Well, let’s say she spent 30 minutes with each sailor. That would mean she spent 1,000 hours doing what she did. Do you really think 2,000 sailors are at fault? Or just her? I’m glad you were never my CO.

If they don't it's probably because they are told not to.

The sailors of Taffy 3 are spinning in their graves.
The US military has been destroyed by PC bullcrap.

Why haven’t they not made a movie of Taffy 3. It’s one hell of a sea battle and worthy of a great director and actors. Never mind, I just answered my question.

Second thought, Clint Eastwood could pull it off.

Not to mention all the people who worked with her every day.

Sorry, fell asleep.

Ernest Evans, 1/2 Cherokee, 1/4 Creek and ALL AMERICAN.
Obama would have put him on desk duty, at best.

Leyte Gulf was the end of the Japanese navy.

Sorry, fell asleep on you.

Clint Eastwood would do one hell of job.
Mel Brooks as well.
Even Tom Hanks, he directed at least one part of Band of Brothers.

But this is the age of Obama. He’s probably STILL mad that American Sniper was made.
Maybe, just maybe, if we get Trump elected good movies about real heroes will be made again.

I guess it was Hornfischer who said that Evans attacked that Japanese main force with the fearlessness and ferocity of his Indian ancestors.

The Japanese admiral thought that with the way that Taffy 3 came at them that the American main fleet had to be just over the horizon.

And of course the courage wasn’t Evans’ alone, it was the crew of all those tiny ships. But Evans exemplified it and demonstrated the finest that the US Navy has produced. Evans and the Battle Off Samar deserves to be better known.

Think about it; if the CO got 2000 requests for Paternity leave, that means at least 1999 sailors filed falsified “OFFICIAL DOCUMENTS” for Paternity leave.
Filing a false document in the military is grounds for Court Martial proceedings in any branch of the military service.
As for her; she would be giving birth in the PENAL WARD in the Nearest Naval Hospital.
All of them would be receiving their DISHONORABLE DISCHARGES upon Out Processing during their final day of incarceration.
The so called woman and at least one man in this case, are both guilty of an overt act of MUTINY aboard ship, the other 1999 are at the very least guilty of supporting that MUTINY.
Harsh perhaps; but never forget, discipline is the one element that makes any military branch functional under combat conditions.
Fraternization is is illegal; and discouraged with degrees of punishment for a reason, this type of activity is the reason.
When I enlisted I took an OATH, these people just sh!t on that oath.

Yup, Mel Gibson would do an excellent job. Tom Hanks might put some left leaning tinge on it, but may be not.

Boy would I love a movie on the Battle of Leyte (and maybe the larger Battle of Samar). That battle within the battle was, in IMHO, the Navy's finest moment. The little ships taking on the best of the Japanese Navy, winning against all odds. The mice roared and fought like lions and they won day.

The Tin Can sailors knew they were expendable, and lived and fought like it.
Taking on battleships and heavy cruisers with five inch guns?
Just another day on the job.

“This will be a fight against overwhelming odds from which survival cannot be expected. We will do what damage we can.”
Lt Cdr Robert W Copeland
USS Samuel B Roberts

The Johnston and Roberts names should never be retired from the navy.
Sadly only one other ship was named Johnston and it was retired long ago.

Maybe someone should start a petition?!
